Above the Clouds
We’d hit the end of the trail officially recognized and maintained by the state of Hawaii in about an hour and a half, at around eleven in the morning. A wooden bench played host to an older couple, and small families milled around with phones raised for pictures, children and parents smiling against the wide view of the ocean and the town of Hanalei nestled twelve hundred feet below in the sweeping lap of the valley. They’d all come equipped for the trail; shorts and tennis shoes abounded, backs unencumbered by packs that only would have served to free the hands which clutched twelve ounce water bottles. Eyes followed Charlie and I with curiosity.

With the Sun
Colter awoke to the distinct feeling of something gently nibbling on his left ear. His eyes cracked apart, dried blood caked in his eyelashes and down one side of his face, his chest and back feeling like he’d lost a game of chicken with a steam engine. Clear blue sky filled his vision, blurry in the harsh sun. He took a deep, rattling breath, and coughed. The sunlight became kinder to his eyes, and the coyote that had been sampling him took a few gentle steps back.

Natal
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I can’t say with any certainty whether my late night foray up the porch stairs and through the long doorless entrance was a matter of mere curiosity or perhaps an ugly and well-hidden desire that I, too, might be swallowed up by the house like so many others had allegedly been. I wasn’t even entirely sure that the light in the window was anything more than an oddity at first, something curious yet entirely mundane like late season fireflies or a clinging patch of bioluminescent fungus.
