Guides in the Snow
It was just a couple days before Christmas, 1860. Dr. John O’Brien, a country doctor practicing in rural Missouri, had just sat down to supper with his wife, Elizabeth. The meal Elizabeth had made was perfect fare for a cold, blustery winter’s night—hot fried chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, and bread fresh out of the oven. But Dr. O’Brien could only pick at his food.

Clowns: The evolution from comical to creepy to criminal
Clowns used to be fun as well as funny. They delighted generations of children who loved them and looked forward to seeing them at the circus. In the cartoon Dumbo, (1941) the clowns were hilarious, playing jokes on each other and making the audience laugh. One was standing on the top of a firetruck ladder roasting a hot dog in the flames from a fire that his pals were down below trying to put out.

The Name of the Job
His hands shake as he reaches for the glass bottle. Auburn looking liquid splashes around, hypnotizing him with its circular motions. Ringing sounds in his ear as the horrid sounds of screaming, crying, and eventual death flood his memory like a slasher movie stays with you. A chill passes through him as he twists the cap off and takes a swig of his whiskey. That’s when the ringing stops, the crying fades, and a voice one single voice comes into clarity.

Empty Eyes
Rain was falling rhythmically, sliding down the windows like the uninvited fingertips of a stranger. The dark green paint was peeling off the walls of the small hotel room and as I rose from the bed it creaked in protest. I walked to the window to light the only candle in the room. Lightning flashed and the power went out as I slid down the wall underneath, seeking comfort in what little light gathered on the tattered floorboards. I had ended up in this small town beside the ocean in a desperate attempt to outrun them. The horrible creatures that had escaped from my mind and now followed me everywhere; whispering in my ear about all the terrible things they would do once they lay their hands on me. I did not even know if these things could ever actually touch me. Can something that should not have a physical form grab a hold of you? I had tried everything to get rid of them. I had even tried to grab THEM and shove them back into the deep, dark corners of my head. But they refused to go back to their jail cell, slipping from my grasp each time as though I were nothing. After months of this torment I resorted to running. I left when the sun rose as they seemed to fade away with the light.

The Lights
John Hanley hurried to Euston Station through London streets thronged with last-minute Christmas shoppers. He pushed forward as flurries of snowflakes brushed his cheeks and shops were lit with Christmas baubles while passers-by looked with wonder at the white drifting feathers falling from a dark sky made orange by city lights. Ahead of him lay a long train journey to the wilds of Shropshire to spend Christmas with his ailing father, and he worried he'd be late. He had left the surveyor's office at Bedford Square around 4 pm, but it was already nearly dark. He had to divert up Tottenham Court Road to buy his father a Christmas present and card, which he planned to write once the train was moving. The crowds of people annoyed him. The sudden clumps of shoppers stopping to point in windows got in his way and made him sigh in exasperation.
