If Zombies Existed

You wouldn't survive!

You better run!

Here's a terrifying thought, what if the dead rose from their graves and feasted upon the living? Like something out of a cult horror film, the likelihood of this ever happening is most definitely impossible. However, modern media has depicted zombie outbreaks, in a much more believable fashion. The possibility of a world ending virus isn't something alien, we've already experienced several deadly diseases and plagues across the world. So to imagine a virus that not only killed thousands, but also deteriorated the minds and bodies of many, into becoming mindless cannibals, limping from one human meal to the next. Suddenly that idea doesn't seem too far fetched, there are also dozens of movies, TV shows and books that explore this horrifying possibility. Some have made the link between rabies, a disease that turns once calm and loyal pets, into rage filled beasts. What if a virus like that, eventually effected humans? It could spell the end of society as we know it. Other sources have linked the idea of Cordyceps, a fungi which possesses the bodies of ants in order to spread, to one day evolve into infecting humans, turning us into hideous monsters who only live to breed without intellect.

A zombie virus could even be used in biological warfare, perhaps a toxic gas that rots the mind of it's victims, or releases a chemical that fills them with intense emotions too difficult to resist. Imagine a war where soldiers throw bombs, that emit a gas containing this virus, weakening their enemies into mindless husks. This could be spread through the water supply, inserted in food products by saboteurs and so forth. If an outbreak like this occurred, it would be extremely difficult to contain, especially if the infected are rage induced and full of energy. It wouldn't take long until entire towns and city centres are overrun, swat teams and riot police will struggle to fight back against the relentless mob, who will fear nothing, not even gunfire. A weapon this lethal and unstoppable could spare armies from using soldiers altogether, fly in a drone to initiate a new infection upon enemy territory, sit back and relax as they eventually cannibalize themselves and starve to death.

When a cure is hopefully created, it could be another source of power, that would be sought after by oppressive governments and dictators. They could use this hope against their own people, only curing the world's elites, or those who hand over any and all freedoms to those leaders. So even if the world could overcome the zombie apocalypse, a cruel new world order would soon rise to oppress us all.

Most frightening of all is the idea of becoming infected, slowly losing all sense of yourself or the memory of loved ones. Becoming filled with a never end wrath or hunger, perpetually lashing out at anyone who crosses your path. The confusion you would feel, not knowing who you even are any more, it would be a living hell. What if your mother, father, sister, brother or child got infected. How traumatizing would it be, to see that person eat another, covered in blood and guts, devouring brains, crunching on human bones. Would you be able to kill your loved ones, even after they become flesh eating beasts? I doubt many could. That's how the virus would spread, it would be too difficult to understand and fathom. Many would keep the zombies alive, locking them up in dark cells, hoping one day there would be a cure. Eventually those zombies would break free, only to spread the horror further!

The zombie apocalypse is a nightmare that we are all glad only exists in horror movies, society would not be prepared for such a world ending disaster to really happen.
