Game Over, Man, Game Over: Robert Kirkman Says Clementine Is Never Coming To 'The Walking Dead'

Since Robert Kirkman first put bloody pen to paper in 2003, we have seen The Walking Dead move from comic book, to television, to video games, and it seems that there is no stopping his world in any medium. However, in the murky depths of Kirkman's mind, can he ever see his various franchises coming together under one roof for the ultimate episode of #TheWalkingDead?

Even after denying that it could ever happen, Kirkman has already told us how he would crossover The Walking Dead and its sister show Fear The Walking Dead, but the creator of the zombie apocalypse has ruled out a familiar face making the leap from video games to TV.

Oh my darling Clementine.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Kirkman said that fan-favorite Clementine from #Telltale's The Walking Dead games will never find herself a home in the comic books or AMC's stalwart show:

"No. I like that if you want to play 'The Walking Dead' video game, you get Clementine, and you get a unique experience … I think that it makes 'The Walking Dead' more special that the comic has an experience, and they’re very linked … It would be cool to see Clementine show up and high-five Carl, but you’re just gonna have to write some fan-fiction, I’m sorry.”

Kirkman also poo-pooed the idea that Andrew Lincoln's vocals as a grizzled Rick Grimes could make their way into a future installment of the TWD games. Although his shows could eventually crossover, it sounds like Kirkman plans on keeping the rest of his worlds very much separate.

First released in 2012, Telltale's The Walking Dead took us on a brand new journey of action-based decision making. Released in episodic chapters, you see early decisions affect you later on in the game. It is a staple model that we have seen Telltale use time and time again, while The Walking Dead flourished in video game form.

Originally focusing on reformed convict Lee Everett, the character later adopted orphan Clementine and the two set our on a quest for survival together. While Lee bowed out in the climax of the first season — then returned in a flashback — Clementine is the only character to appear in all four seasons of the game.

Since her inception, Clementine has become a major player in the games and even inspired her own "ForClementine" hashtag to show how she has helped people in real life. It seems to be a bit of a one-way street and Kirkman's comments are a little confusing considering that his two entities have crossed over before. We have already seen TWD staples Glenn Rhee and Paul "Jesus" Monroe briefly enter the life of Clementine and then head off to follow their comic book storylines.

Now in Issue #169 of the comics, it looks that no matter how long Image Comics keeps rolling with The Walking Dead, Clementine will never cameo. While Clementine may not be shuffling off to the grave, fans of the character will only have one more chance to enjoy our hardened heroine when Telltale's The Final Season is released next year. However, it is more than a little tragic that our intrepid little survivor will be resigned to forever being made of pixels and code.
