Fangs and first impressions

I recently was lucky enough to receive an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy.) of Life Sucks book one of the Bloodsuckers Blog series by Ella Stone. This is my review and my first that I have ever posted, I welcome all feedback and would love to hear if this piece had any effect on your desire to procure this particular piece of literature.

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last, I don’t how long 50-100 years? You are probably familiar with vampires in one form or another and Life Sucks will probably not change any preconceived notions you might have on the genre. In fact one of the charms of the book is that it doesn’t pretend it’s charting new territory, our protagonist Merrewyn (Shorthanded Ryn.) Colt in fact expects you to be atleast somewhat familiar with nocturnal bloodsuckers and spends very little time addressing any questions we might have on her condition quickly establishing her strengths and weaknesses early on while focusing more on her down to earth struggles which most readers will find immediately relatable like over bearing families, the tangled web of dating and maintaining friendships.

Written as a blog where each chapter is actually a blog post our protagonist Ryn takes on a journey often jumbled switching between detailing current events (The novel starts off with a post from inside a bathroom and reads as such.) and recalling past ones always with a relevance to her current predicaments. While a few chapters/posts are pure word vomit they do help the reader to get a better understanding of Ryn's inner feelings. A few of the chapters/posts felt unnecessary and seemed more filler to try and get the reader salivating for the next chapter/post but these were thankfully few and drop off once you'd plunged about a third of the way through the novel. An especially nice addition were a few chapters where Ryn answers fictional readers questions and responds to direct messages, both the heartfelt and the vicious, really selling the vibe that you are reading a blog. I found the writing style unique and refreshing and with short chapter/post lengths (Most hovering around five minutes.) a breeze to get through even while juggling a full time job and a young child.

Characters and plot are believable. Everyone beside our protagonist seems especially good at life and is especially studious in whatever they pursue but as I read I couldn't help wonder if this was because they were truly gifted or because Ryn's perceives them as such. I was never confident that Ryn was an unreliable narrator but I couldn't rule it out either. The main plot of the novel is not particularly complicated but thoroughly thought out leaving no trace of plot holes following Ryn as she tries to escape her self imposed exile after being turned and navigates a new relationship and connecting with old friends and family members who of course have their own agenda for Ryn. I'm not ashamed to admit a few of the mysteries and surprises events kept me turning pages so I could find out what happened next. While a few mysteries are left at the end (Presumably to be answered in the forthcoming sequel.) their nothing to make you hurl the book across the room in frustration and everything leaves off in satisfying way.

All in all I had a wonderful time with Life Sucks and am curious to see what Ryn does as time goes on. If your looking for a fun book to kill a few hours Life Sucks is deserving of your time and money. You probably won't come away with a brand new prospective on life but I've never been of the opinion that a book has to be earth shattering to be worth a read.
