5 Scary Movies Way Too Disturbing For Casual Horror Fans

It's no secret that the horror genre isn't for everyone. There is a long list of reasons for why someone wouldn't want to watch horror movies — they're too scary, too gory, too weird or simply too shocking. Whatever the reason might be, the genre is definitely one of those things you either love or hate. Sometimes a horror movie is just creepy enough to win mainstream appeal.

With that said, other movies go way too far for mainstream audiences and even casual horror fans. Those who love horror really do love it, though, and a lot of it can be due to shock value or disturbing stories.

So here are five lesser-known disturbing horror movies that even diehard fans of the horror genre might have never seen, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth watching ... if you're brave enough to actually sit down and watch them. Good luck!

1. 'Deadgirl' (2008)

Deadgirl is interesting, to say the least. The story follows a group of teenage boys after they discover a woman's body in an abandoned mental asylum. Eventually, the boys use the "deadgirl" to their advantage and begin taking turns experimenting with her. Oh, I forgot to mention that she's unable to die.

This movie definitely isn't for the faint of heart, but it is a good way to test your own stance on morality.

2. 'Cannibal Holocaust' (1980)

You've probably never seen Cannibal Holocaust, because it's essentially been banned all around the world. This film follows (fictional) documentary filmmakers as they encounter a cannibalistic tribe in the Amazon. The film not only contains severely graphic depictions of violence and murder, but real animals were killed on screen, which is definitely enough to give you the shivers.

Along with a few other notoriously banned horror movies, Cannibal Holocaust is often considered to be one of the most disturbing ever created.

3. 'Irréversible' (2002)

Trigger warnings, aplenty.

Admittedly, I hadn't heard of Irréversible until just recently. However, you quickly learn why word of mouth didn't quite get around, because it's quite the disturbing piece of cinema. It's full of not just grizzly violence and graphic gore, but the film does contain a rather extensive sexual assault scene. It's definitely not for people who couldn't handle movies like Hostel or Saw.

4. 'Audition' (1999)

After his wife dies, a man holds auditions to try and find a new woman to marry. Sounds harmless, right? Well, after choosing "the one," he quickly discovers that she is not at all who he thought she was. Audition can come across as confusing and slow-paced, and there are subtitles to read, but when it picks up it can really make your skin crawl. I've always found it to be a gem within the horror genre.

5. 'Antichrist' (2009)

If you're familiar with director Lars von Trier, you're aware that his films can pack some punch. By that, I mean they can be a bit confusing and graphic. Antichrist is no different, as it shoves graphic sexuality and death in your face right from the beginning and just keeps getting more intense. It also contains visuals of unsimulated sexual acts, graphic nudity and gore.

It's really something you just have to see, because it can be difficult to find the words to describe it. The film is part of the "Depression Trilogy," which also includes Nymphomaniac - Part 1 and Melancholia, so perhaps it's best to watch all three. That is, if your stomach can handle moving past Antichrist.
