A karambit knife is a style of folding knife featuring an inwardly curved, recurved blade with a sharp point and downward-spreading… What exactly is a karambit? To get started, you'll have to find out what the name means. Karambit means "spear hand" in the Indonesian language of Bahasa Indonesia.

Martial artists often favor these knives because they are easy to conceal, can be used for stabbing if needed, and leave both hands free for grappling or defense. The solid spear point makes these knives easy to keep under control during close-quarters combat (CQC), but their curved design allows them to flow through the target more than straight knives. The karambit is sometimes called a "Balinese Tiger Claw."

History of the Karambit Knife

The karambit is believed to have originated in Indonesia. The earliest versions were made during the 13th century. They were originally used for farm work because they were short and curved. It wasn't until the 17th century that they were used as weapons in defense against pirates and invaders. When the Balinese began fighting to keep their homeland free from Dutch rule, they turned to their karambits for protection.

The Balinese people are trained in silat, a martial art with a fighting style focusing on hand-to-hand combat with knives, swords, and machetes. They learned to use their karambits effectively and with deadly precision during battle. The karambit has been used by the Balinese ever since.

The modern karambit knife is made from stainless steel and features a blade with a nice sharp point on one side and either a curved edge or straight edge on the other side. There are many variations of the karambit available, including standard models as well as those with serrated edges or double blades.

Different Uses for Karambit Knives

The unique design of the karambit allows it to be used in several different ways, making it an ideal multi-purpose type of knife. The karambit is a very good self-defense weapon, as it can be used to stab an opponent using a sharp tip. It's easy to control during a fight, and even a short blade can cause severe damage if thrust deep into the body.

The sharp point can also be used to pry objects open. The edge of the blade opposite the point of the knife can be used for slashing or cutting. The flat of the blade is useful for pounding or hitting with the knife edge, making it effective as a blunt weapon in hand-to-hand combat. The karambit can also be used as a hatchet, cleaver, or chopping knife.

You may have heard of the karambit being used as a throwing weapon, but it's really not suited to this application because the curved blade tends to snap off if used with enough force. It is too heavy to throw with any accuracy, so its only use would be for melee attacks near the end of a fight where you have no other choice but to close with your opponent.

Sharpness and Effectiveness of Karambits

These knives are sheathed, with one edge of the blade rounded and the rest straight. They were initially designed to fit comfortably in a hand, similar to how machetes are used in some tropical regions of the world. This design allows for excellent mobility and momentum when combined with an aggressive chopping motion that creates an extremely effective weapon.

These knives are unique in that they have one of the few true cutting edges of these knives. They were first used as a way to protect oneself from wild animals and enemy tribes. These days, people use them for self-defense and even for slicing fruit and vegetables. According to some, the karambit knife is one of the most versatile weapons ever made.

Karambits are Dangerous Tools!

The karambit knife is also known as the 'cutter'. This means if you are on the receiving side of a slash from this weapon. You may want to consider having an alternative career in mind. It was originally used by tribes in Southeast Asia, but today people from all walks of life are using it for its tactical abilities.

Its unique design allows for a variety of different moves and positions from which to deliver slashes or stabbings depending on the situation at hand. The blade itself can be unsheathed with lightning-quick speed and lends itself nicely to slicing motions that will open up gaping wounds that can oftentimes be fatal with little exertion.

In my opinion, the karambit is one of the most dangerous weapons in modern times. You can maneuver it either on your palm or on between your fingers (depending on the size of said weapon). Not to mention that by inserting your index finger into the gap where the blade folds in half and straightens out, you can perform a lethal slashing motion as if you were stabbing yourself with a dagger.

The blade of this blade is usually three to four inches in length, and made out of hardened steel. The handle is usually made out of wood, bone, or plastic with a variety of different implements being equally effective at delivering some serious damage.
