Most of you have probably heard the claim that Gaza is the world's largest open prison. Today, we are exploring the story of the Gaza Strip – its history, people, borders, and the beneficiaries of the narrative portraying it as the biggest prison in the world.

The Gaza Strip is a small piece of land on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by Egypt to the southwest and Israel to the east and north. Inhabited for millennia, we will focus on its history from 1947.

In 1947, the land was home to both Arabs and Jews under British control. The UN proposed a partition plan for a two-state solution, with Jerusalem as an international city. Jewish leaders accepted the plan, while Palestinians and neighboring Arab countries opposed it, leading to the 1948 War.

Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria joined the war, with Egypt attacking through the Gaza Strip towards Tel Aviv. Israel pushed them back, establishing the Gaza Strip's current borders.

After the war, Gaza was occupied by Egypt but not annexed, remaining under Egyptian military control for 19 years. In 1967, the Six-Day War ended Egyptian control, bringing Gaza under Israeli control.

Tensions continued, and the Oslo Accords in 1993 aimed to establish two states – Israel and Palestine – including the Gaza Strip. Extremists on both sides opposed the accords, leading to their breakdown.

Efforts to revive the peace process at Camp David in 2000 failed, and the Second Intifada began with attacks on Israel. Actions by the PLO and Hamas sabotaged the peace process.

In 2005, Israel withdrew from Gaza to end violence, but Hamas took control in 2006, leading to ongoing conflict. Hamas, seeking Israel's destruction, misuses aid and resources to fuel violence.

The narrative of Gaza as an Israeli-controlled prison is misleading. Hamas, backed by Iran, oppresses the Palestinian people in Gaza, perpetuating violence against Israel. A strong border between Israel and Gaza is essential for the safety and prosperity of both populations.

The people of Gaza deserve peace, prosperity, and security, achievable by ending Hamas' control and violence. Hamas, not Israel, is the true oppressor in Gaza.

The accords aimed to establish two states – Israel and Palestine – with the Gaza Strip included. However, extremists on both sides opposed the accords, leading to the breakdown of negotiations.

Efforts to revive the peace process at Camp David in 2000 failed, and the Second Intifada erupted, marked by terrorist attacks on Israel. The Palestinians' actions, orchestrated by the PLO and Hamas, sabotaged the peace process.

In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip, hoping to end violence and terrorism. However, Hamas seized control in 2006, leading to ongoing conflict and attacks on Israel. The Gaza Strip remains under Hamas, which seeks Israel's destruction.

The narrative that Gaza is a prison controlled by Israel is misleading. Hamas, backed by Iran, is the real oppressor of the Palestinian people in Gaza. They misuse aid, resources, and materials to fuel violence against Israel, perpetuating suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians.

It is crucial to recognize the necessity of a strong border between Israel and Gaza to ensure the safety and prosperity of both populations. The people of Gaza deserve peace, prosperity, and security, which can only be achieved by ending Hamas' control and violence in the region. Hamas, not Israel, is the true prison guard in Gaza.
