September 11th

to all that were lost

By Kia T Cooper-ErbstPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

September 11th, has come again and once again we remember all those that were lost.

Yet again, I think about that day 24 years ago..... thoughts heavy on my soul as i remember the fear of not knowing if distant relatives that I knew lived in NYC were okay. The fear of not knowing what else might be attacked. The realization that what I was watching wasn't some kind of really bad movie that was supposed to seemed funny or world ending.

Waking up that day as a new mom of a almost 1 month old, I remember feeling as though a bit of my innocence was stripped away. Hours.....days.... weeks.... then I flew again to see my parents scared that it would happen again but not wanting to give into fear. That first flight post 9/11, I felt somewhat targeted as a person of color because the news of who was responsible and their ethnic group had just became verified public knowledge..... But again I wasn't letting fear win.

24 years later.....

I am a mom of three now and I still feel that slick edge of fear of knowing that it could happen again. the aftermath of finding out that our country had trained some of them

24 years later.......

We have a generation of children and adults that have only seen the footage and heard the stories but may not or don't really understand the physical and emotional impact that those of us who experienced it still feel.

24 years later......

We have people that are trying to actively rewrite history and to deny groups of people that were there by not talking about their stories and their lives.

24 years later....

Let us always remember those whose stories were not told in the media. The millions of faces of those that were missing and never found in the wreakage. The innocent children who were excited to go a school sponsored field trip but that never had a chance to grow up.

The regular people that were caught in the dust of of the buildings once they collapsed and died or later became ill due to that exposure.

Let us remember all of the victims those seen and unseen especially the ones that haven't died yet but will from the complications that have been turning up due to exposure from 9/11.

We say the words that we shall not forget but ..... we have. We the public at large have somewhat forgotten the stories of people who don't fit the narrative of what the media pushes every anniversary. We have forgotten the hatred towards those that may have looked like those terrorist but were American citizens just like the rest of us.

Every year on the 11th, I remember yes the pain, hurt, shock of what was done but I also reflect on how we as a nation had come together to help and grieve.

Personally, when I started writing this it was meant to just a short reflective piece on how I felt about the 11th and the days after but I couldn't really due it justice in just one writing session.

So a year after I started this..... and with all the craziness that has been happening in the world recently due to the political party in place let me finish this with the grace it deserves.

This is in eternal rememberance for all those past and present that were lost, have lost, or are still dealing with after effects twentyfive years later.

We mourn you, mourn what you and we all lost. We will not forget.
