The Dunsmuir Estate, tucked away in the center of Oakland, seems as a sanctuary that transcends time, retaining the remnants of the occasions that molded its majesty. A rock-solid steward, Mrs. Hellman shepherded the estate through a period of profound change and created an environment that would reverberate for years to come.

Did you know that one of my annual holiday season excursions is Dunsmuir Estate? Yes, I did go to the Dunsmuir Estate's Annual Holiday Tradition every year. I always enjoyed "High-Tea" in the groundskeeper's cottage, which was actually a miniature mansion all by itself. I also took tours of the main home, the grounds, and the road in a horse-drawn carriage—how lovely when you are with your honey bunny, by the way.

Naturally, I attended their family's holiday luncheon in the pool room one year (yes, it was "HUGE"). Oh, and I sent pictures at the time and naturally alerted everyone I knew about the Annual Holiday Tradition event at Dunsmuir Estate.

Images of me drinking tea and clutching my teacup like a good Londoner and riding in a horse-drawn carriage, was sent far and wide. All of my friends and family in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, California, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, and even my cousins in Boston and New York, NY, received those photos. I felt so pretentious, oh, may.

But I'm getting off topic; allow me to go on.

Christmastime Magnificence came to an end, and, I believe 2018, was the last year of Dunsmuir's annual Christmas spectacle, a joyous custom that transformed the mansion into a wintry paradise. The estate's history was nostalgically reflected in the recollections of beloved events such as horse-drawn carriage rides, afternoon teas, and themed Christmas trees, a different one in every room of the magnificent mansion. And the selling of all the ornaments found on each tree in every room in their gift shop that was located in the basement.

With a feeling of stepping back in time, the Dunsmuir, was a captivating blend of festive grandeur and historical allure. Explore the enchanting ambiance of a property that has gracefully witnessed the passage of countless eras, weaving a heritage that transcends geographical confines.

Stone Soul Symphony KBLX's Stone Soul event in 2019 took place in the Dunsmuir House and Gardens, showcasing a captivating blend of music and community. Due to the event's popularity, which attracted over 18,000 people to dance beneath the stars, larger locations had to be used, which is evidence of Dunsmuir's allure. The lineup—a galaxy of musical icons—created the atmosphere for an event that was beyond place and time.

Beyond its physical appearance, Dunsmuir Estate is a symbol of a community's unwavering dedication. Its transition from a possible conference venue to a protected refuge reflects the tenacious spirit of historical preservation and serves as a lighthouse for Oakland's vibrant cultural scene.

John McLaren, the landscape architect for Golden Gate Park, is said to have worked with the Hellmans to build the Dunsmuir gardens, which feature a diverse range of trees such as Hornbeam, Camperdown Elms, and Bunya-Bunya. The Hellman estate also had a glass conservatory with a grotto, an ornate aviary, a formal garden maze, a Japanese garden, a golf course, a formal croquet court, a tennis court, and a swimming pool with a bathhouse in the Mission style. The estate is also home to deer, wild turkeys, and waterfowl.

J. Eugene Freeman, a San Francisco architect, created the Dunsmuir mansion, a prime example of the late 1800s Neoclassical-Revival architectural style. With ten fireplaces, a Tiffany-style dome, wood paneled public spaces, and inlaid parquet floors, the 37-room estate occupies 16,224 square feet. The house's servant quarters are built to hold twelve live-in employees.

Nestled within verdant grounds and neoclassical elegance, Dunsmuir has a mysterious charm.

The Christmas Tour opens like a secret doorway into a world where time stops still, complete with themed trees and holiday puppet plays. It is a living, breathing monument to the enchantment of bygone ages, not merely an estate.

One can't help but wonder about the stories that have yet to be written as we walk about Dunsmuir's grounds. What legends are waiting to be resurrected inside its walls, and what festivities are ahead? The estate may contain the key to opening up even more enthralling chapters, as it serves as a canvas for shared memories.

From the careful observation of Mrs. Hellman to the joint endeavors of a nonprofit organization and the City of Oakland, Dunsmuir Estate's story is a testament to unwavering commitment. It's more than simply a physical location; it's a haven where the past is lovingly held in the past and Dunsmuir's history endures as a timeless reminder for everyone to treasure.

Remember that you are more than just a tourist to Dunsmuir; you are a part of a living story as you walk its ancient halls. The estate's eternal charm beckons fresh tales to be told, and the wonder of bygone times permeates everything. Accept the enchantment, for Dunsmuir is more than just an estate; it's a celebration that spans centuries and a voyage through time.
