Zazie Beetz, an Actor in Joker: Folie a Deux, Talks About the Musical Aspect of the Film

“I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical.” — Zazie Beetz

So, in some of my earlier posts, I’ve talked about different stuff related to DC Comics movies. I’ll put the links to those at the end of this post.

But today, I wanna dive into the second Joker movie and spill some tea on the awesome music in it, courtesy of Zazie Beetz.

What is Joker: Folie a Deux?

So, what’s up with Arthur Fleck after the first movie? Did all that crazy stuff actually happen, or was it just made up by the Joker himself? Let’s dig into the scoop on Joker: Folie à Deux.

So, Phillips spilled the beans that the sequel’s subtitle would be “Folie à Deux,” which is basically about two people sharing mental disorders in close relationships.

Fans went wild speculating that Harley Quinn, aka Dr. Harleen Quinzel, might be in the mix since she’s got a history with the Joker. And guess what? They were right on the money when Lady Gaga’s name popped up as a potential addition to the cast.

If both of them have some sort of disorder, it’s likely the movie will explore how and why they teamed up in the first place. They might retell Harley’s origin story from the comics or Batman: The Animated Series, or maybe Arthur’s storytelling style will fill in the missing pieces. Or who knows, maybe Harley will take the spotlight this time and tell her own tale.

Remember that Taxi Driver vibe in the first flick? Well, hold on to your hats because the sequel is gonna be a musical too. Even though Arthur never confessed to being a Scorsese fan, the new movie seems to draw inspiration from Scorsese’s New York, New York.

It’s a musical about a saxophonist and a singer falling in love while dealing with the harsh realities of life. Pretty cool, huh? Despite the dark tone, it’s meant as a nod to those classic movie musicals.

We don’t have the inside scoop yet on whether the sequel will have original songs, but there’s some buzz going around that Lady Gaga might lend her musical talents. And who knows, maybe Arthur and Harley will perform in some twisted jukebox musical. Either way, it’s gonna add an interesting twist to their crazy love story on the big screen.

Oh, and guess what? Zazie Beetz is gonna reprise her role as Sophie Dumond, the single mom who lived in Arthur’s building. Their supposed romance turned out to be all in his head, so it’s unclear how she’ll fit into the picture this time.

Will Arthur cling to his fantasy, or will Dr. Quinzel try to help him face reality? Or maybe poor Sophie will just suffer at the hands of two increasingly insane individuals?

Besides the main crew, the film will also feature Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey in secret roles. They could be other Arkham doctors, a young James Gordon, city officials, or connected to Arthur’s messed-up past. Time will tell!

What’s with the musical element?

So, there’s some buzz going around about Joker 2 and whether it’s gonna be a full-blown musical or not. Zazie Beetz, one of the stars, spilled the beans in an interview, saying that people will be surprised by what the movie actually turns out to be.

According to her, it’s not gonna be your typical musical. We all have a little music and dance in our lives, so it’s gonna be interesting.

Back in 2022, there were reports suggesting that Joker 2 would be a musical extravaganza, but that idea got toned down later on. Now it’s being compared more to A Star is Born, with some musical elements but not a full-on musical.

In the sequel, Lady Gaga takes on the role of Harley Quinn. She’s a talented actress and singer, even nabbing an Oscar, so it makes sense to tap into her musical abilities for this movie. Plus, she worked with the director of Joker on A Star is Born, so they have some history.

We don’t know much about the plot of Joker 2 yet, but there’s a rumor that part of it will be set in Arkham Asylum. Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Joker in 2018, is back as the Clown Prince of Crime and reportedly getting paid a cool $20 million.

Final Words

Joker 2 is slated to hit theaters in October 2024.

But before that, we’ve got The Flash coming out this Friday, June 16, which is the next big DC movie.
