Why The SnyderVerse's Popularity is WBD's Best Solution!

The release of Zack Snyder's Justice League on digital platforms after its debut as an HBO Max streaming exclusive shows that there is still an appetite for the DCEU and WBD's best solution to their problems. The Snyder Cut and the concept of the SnyderVerse is one of the most demanding requests by fans for the future of the DCEU. Although the first film in the DCEU was Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, it was the release of the Snyder Cut, the latest film in a franchise that former WB executives believed was a box office failure only to become a global phenomenon.

After helming Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder was well into post-production on Justice League when a family tragedy forced him to step away from the film for a while. The director was also involved in behind-the-scenes creative disputes with several former Warner Bros. and DC Films executives at the time. Jim Lee claimed that Snyder wasn't dismissed, but the studio's determination to pursue the film in a far different way than what Snyder envisioned undoubtedly taints the nature of his departure. While he was away, WB and DC Films hired Joss Whedon to rewrite a significant portion of the script and reshoot 80% of the film. This resulted in a critical and commercial flop, which prompted a campaign for the release of the Snyder Cut.

When the film was eventually made available on HBO Max, it was widely hailed as being a superior cut and revealed many baffling alterations made to the plot and tone of Whedon's version. After Zack Snyder's Justice League, fans hoped for more SnyderVerse films, including Justice League 2 & 3 and Man of Steel 2, which conclude Snyder's intended five-film arc. The latest digital release of Zack Snyder's Justice League shows a continuous commercial interest in the franchise by Warner Bros. Discovery, solidifying the SnyderVerse's position as the best option for the DCEU's new 10 years plan.

Since the beginning, there has been debate over whether or not the Snyder Cut campaign was genuine. The Wall Street Journal quoted a source close to the project who asked, "Who are these people who won't stop talking about the magical Snyder cut that doesn't exist," suggesting that both the movie didn't exist, which it did, and that the request for the Snyder Cut wasn't significant or legitimate. Sometimes, it has also been claimed that the campaign was aided by social media engagement from bots, such as in a report from The Wrap that claimed support for Zack Snyder's Justice League and his new Netflix zombie movie Army of the Dead were boosted by bots during voting for the Oscars' new "Fan Favorite" and "Cheer Worthy Moment" awards. The Academy denied this claim, citing steps taken to ensure vote applicants all adhered to their vote submission guidelines.

Additionally, it has been alleged that Snyder himself was behind the extensive fan campaigns. Some of Joss Whedon's supporters promoted the idea that Zack Snyder and Cyborg actor Ray Fisher conspired against Joss Whedon. Whedon himself didn't seem reluctant to accuse Snyder explicitly in an interview with Vulture, saying "I don't know who started it. I just know in whose name it was done.” The Rolling Stone released a report a day before the digital release of the Snyder Cut, claiming that 13% of Snyder Cut engagement was driven by fake accounts. The report implied that Snyder was actively involved in organizing the bots and even suggested that he was the one who paid for several fan-driven marketing campaigns, even though these campaigns openly raised money for Snyder Cut promotion via a fundraising website. Furthermore, many other publications have disproven or shown how other marketing campaigns used the same or even more fake accounts.

Even if the allegation that bots increased demand for the Snyder Cut is true, this does not undermine the campaign's obvious genuine success, which included evidence of demand that went much beyond merely social media interaction. In addition to raising nearly $500,000 for the Association for Suicide Prevention through the aforementioned charity events, the Snyder Cut was one of the most in-demand movies of 2021, according to a third-party social media study by Parrot Analytics, which was published by Business Insider. Home Brew, the marketing company Warner Bros. employed to promote the Snyder Cut, released a case report claiming record-breaking social media engagement levels. Even after adjusting for the alleged fake engagement, there is no doubt that there was a lot of real, authentic demand for the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League. The claim that fake account activity accounted for 13% of Snyder Cut-related engagement may make some of those running these campaigns look bad, just as the claims of toxic behavior from some of the movie's supporters do.

When The Snyder Cut was made available for streaming in March 2021, it also performed well. The absence of official data from HBO Max, which they typically do for other high-performing movies, has made it difficult to fully understand the situation, but a good amount of third-party data demonstrates that it was competitive with other 2021 releases. This is especially noteworthy given that it had a smaller marketing budget and was widely perceived as a simple alternate cut of a movie that was released in 2017, which was a box office failure. The Snyder Cut saw 1.8 million views in its first four days, compared to 1.9 for Dune and 2.2 for Wonder Woman 1984. Zack Snyder's Justice League more than doubled its opening weekend performance over the next 39 days. AT&T credited Zack Snyder's Justice League alongside Godzilla vs. Kong as a major influence on HBO Max's growth. Apptopia reported nearly 1.5 million HBO Max app downloads, a 64% increase from the previous week. Mortal Kombat, according to Samba TV's data vastly outperformed Zack Snyder’s Justice League in viewership, though the martial arts movie saw a 3.9% decrease in app downloads. The data for The Suicide Squad and Wonder Women 84' were similar to Mortal Kombat's data decrease in app downloads.

Attacks on the Snyder Cut such as claims that bots boosted the campaign are ultimately a little odd. The movie was released and it was a vast improvement. Many fellow filmmakers and comic creators joined fans in showing support for Zack Snyder and were even influenced by his films. Even the MCU's Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, support Snyder's cut saying "See the Snyder Cut. That's the definitive cut. You don't need to see anything else". Zack Snyder's Justice League's Rotten Tomatoes score is a Fresh 71 percent and a massive 94 percent audience score. While Rotten Tomatoes shouldn't be the metric studios use to measure a movie's success, considering the website has been accused multiple times of favoriting Disney's proprieties, especially Marvel and Pixar. IMDB created a separate entry for Batman V Superman: Ultimate Cut, which was also a vast improvement over the theatrical cut.

While the Snyder Cut is only now becoming available digitally, when it was released on home media in 2021, it quickly shot to the top of Amazon's best-selling Movie & TV list in multiple formats, earning the title of "super seller" after selling five times as many copies as The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, the film that came in second place. It's tough to measure home media sales data over long periods, so it's unclear how well it's performed overall, but its launch week made a tremendous impression. This is similar to the home media release of Batman V Superman: Ultimate Cut, it was also one of the best-selling movies on home media for that year.

The demand for more of Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, and Jason Momoa's Aquaman is such a simple answer to the recent announcement of a 10-year plan for DC Films by David Zaslav. Snyder's versions of the characters are all highly popular, even outside the films he directed. The success of the Snyder Cut on HBO Max, blu-ray, and now on its belated digital release is proof of a passionate, financially viable audience. Although WB originally undermined Snyder's plan more than five years ago, it is clear that the SnyderVerse still has a large dedicated following. The popularity and commercial success of Zack Snyder's Justice League means that the SnyderVerse will continue to be the best solution to the DCEU.
