Nearly 30 years ago the Sailor Senshi awoke with a simple mission, to protect love and justice from the evils of the universe. Not many franchises can boast the longevity Sailor Moon has seen. The franchise is not going away any time soon either, as they are producing new versions of the Sailor Senshi in the Sailor Moon Crystal series. But, for many fans the original series is still the cream of the Sailor crop.

With 200 episodes, 3 movies and a collection of specials, the original characters have been showcased to their maximum potential. These are the versions of the characters fans, from the Sailor Moon Eternal fan group, have been voting on to discover which Sailor Senshi is the most popular. With hundreds of votes cast, the results have been surprising and now we will look at where are Sailor styled heroes rank in fan popularity.

14. Sailor Star Maker

Cool, collected, reticent, and hard to understand. These are ideal ways of describing this Sailor Senshi who comes from another planet. With her two comrades, Sailor Star Maker is a refugee on Earth, seeking to find her lost princess. On Earth the trio take the disguise as the idols forming the band The Starlights. This was not a simple disguise, as they turned themselves into men as a way to attract beautiful women, in hopes of finding their lost princess.

Sailor Star Maker easily received the least coverage of the Sailor Starlights, but she did seem to have conflict with Sailor Mercury. This is more down to both being the logical thinkers within their team. Both could not refute the others intent or purpose, but with their different ways of approaching a problem meant they would disagree. This firm mindset that Sailor Star Maker can take can causes her to come across cold and rigid. But this is simply a front to guard her heart from more pain. When the time called she put her feelings into Sailor Moon and proved to be an vital ally to the Sailor Senshi.

13. Sailor Star Healer

If you were to list traits Sailor Star Healer holds you could say, delicate, egotistical and grudge-holding. But these traits come from the pain of losing everything she believed in at the hands of Galaxia. As a member of the idol band The Starlights, he could be perceived as the one in a managerial position for the group, as his opinion mattered enough to make him a judge at a singing contest. When transformed in Sailor Star Maker, she carried this strategic thinking and determination into battle.

She held a particular distaste towards Sailor Venus, the leader of the Sailor Senshi. This is perhaps due to Venus being idealistic and optimistic, which are perhaps traits Sailor Star Healer held before losing everyone and everything important to her. But when the Inner Senshi sacrificed themselves to save the Starlights and Sailor Moon from Galaxia, it clearly changed Sailor Star Healer. This allowed her to fight once again with purpose and feelings other than revenge.

12. Sailor Star Fighter

The leader of the Sailor Starlights, she came to Earth looking for her lost princess and instead found another that captured his/her heart. When Sailor Star Fighter first encountered Sailor Moon, it was clear something sparked between the pair. This instantly distracted Sailor Star Fighter from her mission. Especially as Sailor Moon started to doubt her relationship with Tuxedo Mask whom she had not heard from in months. When her comrades began to notice this and warned her against forming bonds with Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Senshi.

But, when has anyone in the history of creation ever listened to those closest to them when it comes to matters of the heart? As he/she offered Sailor Moon comfort, Sailor Star Light found herself in a difficult position as she had a new princess she wanted to protect. This was only amplified when the Starlights found their princess. But this conflict within her heart would not last long, as Galaxia took the Star Seeds of their lost princess, the Inner Senshi and the Outer Senshi. With so much lost, you would think Sailor Star Light would lose all hope, but instead she found new strength in protecting Sailor Moon from Galaxia.

11. Tuxedo Mask

The only male hero to appear throughout the franchise, Tuxedo Mask has a history as complex as Sailor Moon herself. Being the reincarnation of Prince Endymion of Earth, he was once in a relationship with the Princess of the Moon. But when forces on his planet attacked the Moon Kingdom, he died in battle protecting the princess. She then scarified herself, very Romeo and Juliet style. This made the Queen of the Moon Kingdom use the power of the Silver Crystal to reincarnate them all in the future. In the present day he is reunited with his love from his past life. But that is just the tip of the ice berg, as he discovered in the future he will be King of the Earth when his future daughter arrived in the present day seeking their help.

Throughout the series run he forms a close bond with Sailor Pluto, as she is destined to be a great friend and protector to his future daughter. This was even shown when the pair fought to protect Chibi-Usa from being captured by the Death Busters. While he is often present in the battles, he rarely oversteps his mark and allows the ladies of the franchise to shine. But it is safe to say he is a dedicated boyfriend and is always their for his "meatball head".

10. Sailor Chibi Moon

To call Chibi-Usa a brat when she first appeared in the series would be completely justifiable. When she appeared out of the sky, she instantly got on the wrong side of Sailor Moon. She especially achieved this by showing love towards Tuxedo Mask. To make matter worse the pair were even forced to live together, when Chibi-Usa brainwashed all of Sailor Moon's family into thinking she was a relative of theirs. What shocked all, but none more than Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, was she was not lying and was family, as she was their daughter from the future.

Once they saved her future and Chibi-Usa returned to her time, they thought life would go back to normal. Instead Chibi-Usa returned, now as Sailor Chibi Moon, and was a trainee Sailor Senshi. She mentored under the other Sailor Senshi and faced some tough challenges in her time. Perhaps the toughest was when her friend Horatu was turned into Mistress 9 of the Death Busters. Despite all's attempts to save Hortaru, the failed and she sacrificed herself only to be reborn as a baby. This resulted in Sailor Chibi Moon losing her dear friend, or at least until the baby grew up.

9. Sailor Mercury

The first Sailor Senshi to join Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury is the Sailor Senshi that will always use her mind before her fists. She used her intelligence on numerous occasions to discover the weak point on an enemy or to connect the dots to some villainous scheme. But before becoming a Sailor Senshi, her brains actually worked against her. She found herself unpopular and talked about by her fellow classmates. This all changed for her when she befriended Sailor Moon and joined her as Sailor Mercury.

While she may have been the quietest of the Sailor Senshi, she would often be the voice they would need to hear. But her true growth came when she listened to herself and made the choice to remain with her friends rather than studying abroad. With her more collected and refined ways of thinking, she would try her best to resolve any situation. But she also knew when to keep out of the problem at the same time, especially when Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars were butting heads.

8. Sailor Uranus

Wrapped in mystery, two mysterious Sailor Senshi appeared on the scene during the shows third season. One of the Sailor Senshi was the Sailor Uranus, a soldier who took no nonsense but also had a romantic side to her. Working away from Sailor Moon and her group, Sailor Uranus worked endlessly to discover the three individuals who's Heart Crystals held the talismans to call forth the Holy Grail. In a plot-twist, Sailor Uranus was one of the people who held a talisman within her Heart Crystal and she sacrificed herself to restore it.

Brought back to life by Sailor Pluto, Sailor Uranus and the rest of the Outer Senshi followed their primary mission. To stop, Sailor Saturn's awakening. This brought them into conflict with the Inner Senshi and ended in a battle with Sailor Uranus leaving with Sailor Neptune. When she returned in the fifth season, she was made stronger by Sailor Saturn's rebirth and joined Sailor Moon. But remaining true to her mission, she distrusted the Sailor Star Lights, as to her they were invaders from another solar system. Strong, tough and brave, she is a Sailor Senshi never to be pushed into a corner.

7. Sailor Mars

Following shortly after Sailor Mercury's awakening, Sailor Mars joined Sailor Moon when whispers around town spoke of a shrine maiden and girls disappearing. Sailor Moon refusing to believe Rei was the one behind the disappearances and being intrigued by her resulted in a new ally in Sailor Mars to awaken. To say Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars butted-heads would be an understatement, but deep down the pair perhaps hold the strongest friendship between all the Sailor Senshi.

With her psychic abilities and fire powers, she was a powerful Senshi within the Inner Senshi. However, her connections to the flame would often be more helpful that her firepower. While mediating, the flames would warn her of incoming dangers before they arrived. This often enabled her to warn her comrades and begin to discover what threat was heading their way. Her burning passion to fight for love and justice never wavers in the slightest and from start-to-finish she offer fans fights they will never forget.

6. Sailor Venus

The leader of the Sailor Senshi, Sailor Venus was known to the world before Sailor Moon. She fought evils in the name of love and justice in London as the heroine Sailor V. When she revealed herself to the other Sailor Senshi she pretended to be the Princess the group had been searching for. This was in fact only her fulfilling her primary job as protector to the true princess, who's past life's memories had not returned to her yet. But when the ruse was over, she bowed to her reincarnated princess and took the role as leader of the team.

Being the first Sailor Senshi to awaken and take the fight on alone, she honed her skills well during this time. This enabled her in being a good leader to the others and she utilised her comrades strengths well. She also gave viewers their fair share of laughs, as she would sometimes be desperate to find true love. A major highlight of this is an episode where she tries to go on two dates simultaneously. When you look back at all of her time in the franchise, you notice just how strongly she holds her mission to her heart and how her fellow Sailor Senshi will always be her top priority.

5. Sailor Neptune

Entering the top five, Sailor Neptune is one of the few Sailor Senshi who never had how she became a Sailor Senshi revealed in the anime. Along with Sailor Uranus, they are a powerhouse couple in the franchise and the only other characters, aside from Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, to be in a relationship. The love the pair held was shown, when Sailor Neptune's Heart Crystal was revealed to be one of the hidden talismans and Sailor Uranus sacrificed herself to be with her.

Being graceful, elegant and refined are all traits held by Sailor Neptune. However, being so dedicated to her mission to protect the princess from forces outside of our solar system, these traits can make her appear cold. This is perhaps compounded further by her talisman, the Deep Sea Mirror. This granted her psychic abilities more power and she was highly attuned to incoming dangers. While this was of great asset to the Sailor Senshi when Queen Nehelena returned seeking revenge, it makes her concerned of the day they face a threat they may lose to.

4. Sailor Saturn

• Alias - Hotaru Tomoe, Messiah of Silence & Mistress 9

Perhaps the most tragic and powerful of all the Sailor Senshi, Sailor Saturn is only awoken when the world is about to end. She has the power to destroy an entire planet. But this power is a double-edged sword, or in this case a double-edged scythe. Before she first awoke as a Sailor Senshi, she was used by her father and turned into a vessel for the wicked Mistress 9. But the spirit of her Sailor Senshi would not remain dormant and she was revived just as all seemed lost. Using her ultimate attack, she save the world and faced her doom. The pain of losing her caused a miracle to occur within Sailor Moon, which saved Sailor Saturn from death, but she was reverted back to a baby.

When a new threat was immanent, Sailor Pluto retrieved her and she was raised by Sailor Pluto, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. The first glimmers of her return powered-up the Outer Senshi into upgraded outfits and she unified all the Sailor Senshi powers to grant Sailor Moon access to her Eternal form. While she never unleashed her ultimate power for fans to see, she brought a defensive ability the Senshi were lacking and enabled miracles to happen by her return. All of this is why fans love her as she is an innocent character that could one day have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

3. Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Jupiter was the new girl who's bad reputation preceded her arrival. Fortunately for her, her lunch looked too good to scare Sailor Moon away and she soon found herself as the thunder wielding Senshi, Sailor Jupiter. Easily the toughest of the Inner Senshi, she is never afraid to charge into battle. But her tough exterior conceals a gentle and nurturing side that only her friends see. Whether it be some of her home cooking that is needed or to back them up in a fight, she was ever ready to support her comrades.

One thing that was apparent was she was a romantic soul deep down and she did dream of meeting her soul mate. But, her duty to protect her princess was her top priority. She would literally sacrifice her own body to protect her, much like how she did when she shielded a mesmerised Sailor Moon from the powerful strikes from Queen Nehelena. Her complex personality mixing tough and caring is something fans will always adore her for.

2. Sailor Pluto

Now I will admit, this is why I am so pleased fans voted on this list. As if it was just down to me alone I would not have place Sailor Pluto here. I never realised just how loved Sailor Pluto truly is. The guardian of all space and time, she guards the Space-Time Door. She is said to be over 1000 years old and she has an extremely close relationship with Sailor Chibi Moon. When she first appeared she stood between the Sailor Senshi and them heading to the future to stop the Dead Moon Clan. Appearing only for a single episode, she instantly got audiences speculating if they would see this mysterious Sailor Senshi again.

Fans had to wait nearly a whole season before they saw her again. Appearing before Sailor Moon with the third Talisman, her Garnet Orb atop her staff, she revived Sailor Uranus and Neptune and the trio formed a new Outer Senshi. She would later sacrifice herself to save her comrades from an explosion by stopping time and then returned a season later with a baby Sailor Saturn. When you look at all she did throughout the series, you start to see why fans love her so much. She is perhaps one of the most mysterious Sailor Senshi and fans still have unanswered questions about the limits of her powers.

Now seriously, who else did you think the fans would collectively vote to the top spot? The entire franchise is named after her and without her there would have been so many moments never to happen. Starting it all with a simple encounter with a cat, Sailor Moon was propelled on the ultimate magical girl story. When you look at what makes her her you get, crybaby, clumsy, food obsessed, low grades and often late. Hardly what you consider when you think of someone destined to become the Queen of Earth. But that is because these traits go dim in the bright shine her compassion, love and friendship put into the franchise.

With her being at the centre of the series fans saw her achieve many feats and defeat many foes. She was never afraid to sacrifice herself and use the power of her Silver Crystal if it meant saving her loved ones. But what fans will always tell you is how she is a heroine who fights with her feeling over her fists. Which is a true metaphor for how aggression to a situation is not always the answer. She also gave a true love story that engrossed audiences, as it showed that love can be destined. Her legacy of love and compassion has endured for nearly 30 years and continues to ring strong today.
