Captain Marvel 2 is already breaking records.

The massively successful Captain Marvel made the history books when it became the first female led superhero film to gross over 1 billion dollars. This was only one record Marvel broke in 2019, and it is impressive how they do keep going above and beyond what they have before. Well, Captain Marvel 2 is not out until 2022, but it has already aiming to break a new record.

Nia DaCosta is set to direct Captain Marvel 2

Nia DaCosta has been signed on to direct the smashing sequel to Captain Marvel. This makes her the fourth female director to a Marvel film and the first black female director to a Marvel film. Now, you may think that is the record I am mentioning, but you'd be wrong. While she is the first black female director to Marvel, she is not the first black female director of a massive Hollywood budgeted film. That is not exactly a record that can be broken.

It actually concerns the budget behind the film. Marvel films tend to have bigger budgets than you average film. The amount increasing depending on the scale of the film's ambitions and sequels often seen a budget increase. While the budget for Captain Marvel 2 has not yet been revealed, it does not stop us seeing the future.

Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle in Time" received a budget of $115 million, which seems like a lot. But, that is nothing compared to the average budget put into a Marvel film. Also, typically Marvel films production costs increase with each sequel to make them bigger and better. If we look at Ironman's trilogy of films we get the following budgets:

  • Ironman - $140 million
  • Ironman 2 - $200 million
  • Iroman 3 - $200 million

It is clear to see the sequels received an increase on the budget of over a third to the first film's. This can easily be attributed to the first films success, the second and third films having more special effects and how the sequels were now part of a cinematic universe that was being written. The lowest budget given to an MCU film was to Antman, which still got a whopping $130 million. The sequel received $162 million, following the MCU trend of increasing the budget.

However, both these film series are Earth based tales, where Captain Marvel was a mixture of both space and Earth as a setting. So, we can assume her sequel film will at least follow this, or could be more prominently in space. It has been suggested Captain Marvel could be more of a cosmic Marvel focused character, which takes us into the Guardians of the Galaxy area of the MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 saw a production cost of $170 million, which is $18 million more than Captain Marvel. This makes sense due to the Guardians being mostly told in the MCU cosmic regions, with Earth only featuring through a few short flashbacks. The sequel, Vol. 2, had a $30 million increase to production costs, landing it at $200 million.

So, this means DaCosta is set to break DuVernay’s record for highest budgeted film by a black female director. Like all MCU films, the aim will to be bigger and bolder than the film before. Captain Marvel 2 is highly likely to take viewers into space, face alien threats and require a lot of special effects. All of this increases the required budget. Given the average pattern in budgetary increases over at Marvel and Captain Marvel receiving $152 million to make. Captain Marvel 2 is set for a $180-$200 million thrown into its production.

Until the official figures are released it can not be made official. However, all the evidence shows that DaCosta is set to make the history books herself as she directs a film with a potential $200 million budget. Soon, film records will just have to be titled the records Marvel own if they continue to break them the way they have been.
