The Way Of Walmart

America's largest employer, said it was also giving workers a minimum of 10 hours pay to spend with family as the country prepares to celebrate Christmas.

The announcement coincides with Delta Air Lines' decision to pay its workers a one-time bonus of up to $1,000.

Heather Smedstad, a Walmart associate for 17 years, tells CBS News she was shocked by the company's decision.

"I was surprised, very surprised, but I am very happy about it," she said. "I work hard and work diligently every day."

In a press release, Walmart said, "The bonuses we are providing our associates are a direct result of tax reform and our ongoing commitment to acting in the best interests of our customers and associates."

The move by Walmart to boost wages follows similar moves by Target and other large companies in the retail industry.

How Did Walmart Begin?

A lot of people may be wondering how Walmart became the large behemoth of a company it is today, and although the history of Walmart is rooted in several efforts, here's a look at the key events that helped the company become the leader in the retail industry.

In 1962, Sam Walton started a grocery store called Walton's 5 & 10 in Rogers, Arkansas. In 1974, Walton bought out his partner's interest, making him the sole owner of the store. To operate the store, Walton hired his mother, wife and father. That's when things took a turn for the worse, and soon thereafter, Walton's 5 & 10, or just Walmart, began their heady rise to the top of the retail heap. In short, one man realized a great idea that would affect the lives of countless people and it came to him at the perfect time.

This is such a powerful and insightful lesson that I'm sure the result will be imitated countless times over.

The Art of Fasting

Abraham Hicks claims that fasting is a powerful tool for transformation.

"Fasting is the most powerful tool for transformation on the planet, even more powerful than love, and certainly more powerful than money or sex," he wrote in A Course in Miracles.

In a Q&A with HuffPost, Hicks said, "Fasting produces a shift in your heart chakra and changes the course of your life. It does not cause dramatic changes in body chemistry, but it opens your heart and mind and strengthens your conviction."

Walmart's Discount Garden

Walmart was the first company to offer a discount garden. It's not widely known, but at one point, Walmart had the largest garden section in the world. This garden sale was available to all customers.

When I saw a large white truck outside the Walmart in York, South Carolina, two nights ago, I got the urge to get the scoop.

Let me be the first to tell you: Walmart actually had the largest garden section in the world. It was in Jacksonville, Florida, in a Walmart in 1994.

But this could only be obtained by customers who paid a $2 fee. Walmart took $1 from this fee and invested it in the garden section. This is such a powerful lesson that I'm sure the result will be imitated countless times over.

Walmart team members create hundreds of coats

In just one day, about 350 volunteers and employees at the local Walmart Stores created and donated more than 500 new and gently used winter coats.

This is part of a partnership that kicked off during the holiday season when Walmart associates and their families spent two days making and collecting the coats. Volunteers from area high schools and church groups helped collect the coats, which were donated to Project Warm and packed into nearly a dozen boxes for the homeless.

The program is now rolling out in all of Walmart’s 150 stores throughout southern Arizona.

Operation Warm is the nation’s largest coat drive.
