The Fox and the Hound - A Movie Review

'The Fox and the Hound' is not just about friendship.

Come on, let’s go to the woods. I wonder if Tod and Copper will be there.

The Fox and the Hound is a 1981 Disney film. Becoming the best of friends, Tod and Copper learn the hard way that a fox and a dog cannot be friends. As they grow older, their friendship faces the ultimate test.

It’s amazing how movies have a contrasting atmosphere from when you watch them as a kid to as an adult. The Fox and the Hound is not just about friendship. Sharing bold themes, the film is all about understanding your place in life.

The friendship between Tod and Copper has always stood out to me. Their interactions as kids are so adorable. They made me smile. Studying the film closer, Tod and Copper don’t have many scenes to let their friendship evolve. Sadly, not everybody can be friends.

Unlike most foxes, Tod grew up differently, being treated as a pet. Having this advantage hinders how he views the world. Because everything has been handed to him he is too sensitive. Tod learns a lesson that helps him grow for the better.

As for Copper, he grew up with the motivation to hunt and fend for himself. I never noticed this until my most recent watch. Tod and Copper have contrasting owners. While Tod had the spotlight, we didn’t get a chance to see more of Copper’s story so we could view equal mindsets.

I was impressed by the in-depth characterization in this film. Though lonely, Widow Tweed makes sure that nobody gets away with anything. Amos Slade may look intimidating, but he is not the real monster of the story. And the owl by the name of ‘Big Mama’ is one of the warmest characters in the film.

Voice talents include Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, Pearl Bailey, Jack Albertson, Jeanette Nolan, Pat Buttram, and the unforgettable Keith Coogan and Corey Feldman as the voices of young Tod and Copper. Everyone did an outstanding job in connecting to their characters.

One aspect that I wasn’t fond of was the subplot with these two birds trying but failing to get a caterpillar. This subplot has a contrasting mood entirely. It warranted its own short film rather than being in The Fox and the Hound.

By cutting this unneeded subplot, it could have given more time to flesh out Tod and Copper’s stories. It was a risky move, and I understand that writers cut it to avoid upsetting audiences, but if the film went with the demise of one character it would have provided better context on a significant character’s reason for revenge.

I forgot how overwhelming and scary The Fox and the Hound is for young audiences. Immediately the film starts with a heart-pounding opening. My heart throbbed immensely at emotional scenes. Some scenes may be too upsetting for viewers.

Friendship is the strongest theme. That and change. We have to believe in change. Sometimes, the world has to get in the way of friendships. Choose who you want to be friends with. And if these friendships don’t work out, accept it and move on.

Animation is superb. The chase sequences were planned out very well. Colors transform over the course of the film reflecting the changing mood. The shading in the forest was a highlight to the dark atmosphere. Without the riveting music, we would not have an epic climax.

Disney movies are always fun to look back on. If you have not seen it I recommend that you watch The Fox and the Hound. Be warned that it contains dark elements for young children.
