Howard the Duck is Much Cooler Than You Think
If you've watched the MCU movies, you may have seen a cameo by a talking duck on an alien world. Yes, that's Howard the Duck, whose last cinematic outing was in one of the biggest flops of all time, his self-titled 1986 film, which was somehow produced by George Lucas. You may have also seen Howard in Marvel comics in the last 20 years, appearing in the final battle in "Siege," fighting zombies with Machine Man, or working as a noir detective.

Landmark Comic Book Storylines Part 5: 2000-2010
The beginning of the 21st century saw huge changes in comics. After the speculator-driven explosion of the 90s, the industry imploded. Marvel nearly went bankrupt and had to restructure, and both Marvel and DC tried to bring back powerhouse creators who had left to work at other publishers, or start companies of their own. In 0rder to bring back those creators, and the readers who were turned off by the 90s, Marvel and DC relied more on sub-imprints such as Marvel Max, Marvel Knights, and Vertigo that gave creators the ability to use more mature themes and do things they could never do with mainstrea titles. Digital comics caught on, and Marvel had more success with movies featuring the X-Men and Spider-Man. Things were changing for the better.

Who do they think they are? I've beaten groups before, even though I've never been the greatest fighter. I could do something if I stopped getting hit. Landmark Comic Book Storylines Part 4: The 90s. Top Story - April 2022.
Comics in the 90s are often written off as bottom of the barrel, no-quality, all-gimmick garbage, and rightfully so. For fans who grew up reading the legendary comics of the 60s and 70s, it was awful to see the industry turned into a wasteland of hologram covers and endless spin-offs meant to entice comics investors. A-list heroes like Spider-Man and Batman, who carried two regular titles, a team-up title, and a reprint title each in the 70s suddenly had 5 monthly titles each, plus the reprint title, plus endless graphic novels, specials, mini-series, and guest appearances, all geared toward pushing the latest cartoon and toy line. But there was quality out there if you knew where to look.

Landmark Comic Book Storylines Part 3: The 80s
The 1970s began the Bronze Age of comics, and the 1980s ended it, essentially with the issue seen above. Characters got darker in the 80s, and entire continuities were rebooted. Plus, with the advent of mini-series, spin-offs, and major crossovers, it became a lot more expensive to read full stories. It used to be an event to see the Fantastic Four and Avengers together, and it happened for maybe one or two issues. Suddenly a crossover was multiple issues across multiple titles, with some chapters typically being better done than others, but you wanted to read them all.
