Any good hero needs an equally compelling villain to stand in their way. A villain can be anyone from a simple thief to some sort of alien warlord bent on conquering the universe. Usually however, the villain always appears to be physically superior to the hero and provides a challenge that he or she must overcome in order to save the day.

As heroes are often larger-than-life, super-powered creatures of almost god-like proportions, many of their antagonists follow a similar description. However, there have been quite a few villains who don’t quite fit that bill.

Instead, these villains were born with the qualities no different from the average man but somehow managed to pose a threat to even the mightiest of heroes. This list will explore 10 of the greatest supervillains who do not have superpowers.

Disclaimer: Lists like this are always fuelled by a bit of personal preference so feel free to disagree and share your thoughts with me too!

10. Bane

With his strength deriving from a drug that he injects into himself when needed, Bane was once able to cripple Batman. Although best known for his brute strength, Bane is also very intelligent. Image: DC

Now’s probably the best time to mention that a lot of this will be made up of Batman villains. After all, few heroes face as many non super-powered villains as the Caped Crusader.

Best known as the man who “broke the Batman”, fans often mistake the hulking Bane for having super-strength. After all his imposing stature and his inhuman feats of strength are always on constant display. However, Bane’s strength does not come from any innate powers but rather a drug.

Using the drug known as Venom to enhance his strength during a fight, Bane was able to literally cripple Batman for months. When fighting him head on, The Dark Knight usually requires the help of some kind of super suit to help even the odds. Even without his dose of Venom, Bane is still a capable fighter and marksman.

However, Bane’s enhanced strength is not his only asset nor is it his strongest. The first villain to break the “dumb muscle” stereotype, Bane is an extremely intelligent man who was able to deduce Batman’s secret identity. No other villain has balanced brains and brawn as well as Bane.

9. Mysterio

Although it looks as if Mysterio is in possession of all kinds of magical powers, this is all an illusion that he creates using technology. Image: Marvel Studios

In spite of his appearance and “magical” sounding name, Mysterio’s “powers” are the furthest thing from magic. Relying on his intelligence, Quentin Beck is an expert in all manner of science particularly chemistry and robotics. He is also well-versed in hypnosis and trickery.

Using technology alone, Mysterio is able to create complex illusions that are so strong that he may as well have had the powers of mind control and manipulation. So talented is Mysterio that he is able to replicate other heroes’ powers using science and can use his illusions to bend people to his will.

Even heroes with heightened sensory powers are not immune to Mysterio’s skills. He was once able to make Wolverine kill the entire X-Men by tricking him into believing that they were all supervillains. Mysterio’s illusions were so strong that Wolverine’s heightened senses could not differentiate his friends’ scents from the actual villains.

Although initially a Spiderman villain, Mysterio’s illusions have allowed him to menace the entire Marvel Universe. With his penchant for illusions and knowledge of technology, Mysterio is a threat who is taken very seriously despite that ridiculous fishbowl he has on his head.

8. The Penguin

While The Penguin is not insane, his physical deformities have driven him to achieve wealth and success by any means necessary in order to gain the respect he feels he is owed. He has achieved this by becoming an influential gangster with connections to the elite of Gotham City. Image: DC

One of Batman’s earliest and most iconic foes, Oswald Cobblepot has sat atop Gotham City’s underworld for decades. The Batman franchise has often portrayed its villains as sick or “criminally insane” as opposed to pure evil. The Penguin stands out for being one of the few villains in Gotham to be in total control of his mental faculties.

Physically deformed, The Penguin has made it his life’s work to climb to the top of society by any means necessary. Unlike the many diabolical schemes of the other members of Batman’s rogues gallery, Penguin’s modus operandi mainly revolves around him trying to obtain money and status.

While his sanity may make him less dangerous than the other villains lurking around Gotham, the fact that he is completely aware of his misdeeds definitely makes him all the more malicious. Armed with all kinds of weapons hidden within his umbrellas and well-versed in different fighting styles, this Penguin is definitely more predator than prey.

Oswald Cobblepot’s wealth and influence have often allowed him to evade justice on countless occasions. With friends on both the light and the dark side, The Penguin will always continue to poke his beak into Batman’s affairs.

7. The Riddler

A narcissist with a genius level of IQ, Edward Nygma cannot help himself from leaving clues or puzzles for the heroes to solve. The perfect mix of intellect and insanity, it is never easy to outsmart The Riddler. Image:DC

Another long standing Batman foe, The often lanky and occasionally unwell, Riddler will never be able to physically match up to any of his adversaries. Luckily for him, he never has to. Armed with a wealth of intelligence and cunning, what he lacks in brawn he more than makes up for in brains.

The Riddler’s backstory is simple. As a child, Edward Nygma entered a contest in which he cheated to win. The prize for his victory was a book of Riddles that would soon define his criminal career. Believing that cheating will always yield positive results, Nygma began scamming people at carnivals but soon moved on to bigger things.

A narcissist, The Riddler cannot stop himself from leaving some sort of clue to his involvement and is obsessed with telling the truth. While this is also his biggest weakness, it is never easy to crack Nygma’s Riddles.

The Riddler is proof that an equal mix of intelligence and insanity can serve to be a very dangerous combination. Perhaps a testament to his skill, The Riddler was also one of the earliest villains to deduce Batman’s identity. In keeping with the theme of Batman, Edward Nygma is a prime example of what happens when a brilliant mind is led astray.

6.The Kingpin

After being bullied as a child because of his weight, Wilson Fisk trained his body to reach near superhuman strength. He also hardened his mind to become immune to any form manipulation. On top of that, he has built a vast criminal empire which he controls comfortably behind the shadows. Image: Marvel

The Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk is essentially the Godfather of the Marvel Universe. A ruthless gangster who firmly controls Marvel’s underworld, The Kingpin exists comfortably among the mutants, aliens and literal gods who terrorize the heroes and the world at large.

Born into a life of crime, Fisk was bullied because of his weight. To overcome this, Fisk trained his imposing body intensely and achieved near superhuman strength by hard work alone. The Kingpin is so strong that he is able to defeat Spiderman one-on-one and has even fought the genetically enhanced Captain America to a stand-still. The years he spent building up his empire also developed The Kingpin’s mental toughness and it has become so strong that he is even able to resist hypnosis and other forms of manipulation.

Aside from naturally imposing physical qualities, Kingpin is extremely wealthy, intelligent and influential. He is almost never punished for his crimes and uses all manner of connections to escape justice. His influence also allows him to operate from behind the shadows and rely on an almost limitless number of goons and henchmen to do his bidding for him. The Kingpin has also gained the respect of villains such as Dr. Doom and Loki.

If there was ever an “American Dream” of supervillainy, it would be the Kingpin. He worked hard to get to where he is, turned his weaknesses into literal strengths and is respected by those around him. Almost no other character can say that they achieved super strength and psychic immunity by just working hard enough. It would be inspiring if Kingpin wasn’t so evil.

5.Ozymandias

Aside from his wealth and intellect, the feature that makes Ozymandias so dangerous is his belief that his plan is in the best interest of humanity. In his mind, he is the hero. Image: DC

It is often said that the most dangerous supervillain is the one who believes himself to be a hero. This cannot be more true for Ozymandias. While every other villain in this list has dreams of power, wealth or destruction, Ozymandias believes that his actions are necessary to save the world.

Born into a wealthy family, Adrian Veidt had no reason to turn to villainy. In fact, he was never inherently evil to begin with. A natural genius, Veidt hid this fact from those around him by purposely scoring only average marks in school. When his parents died, he gave away the vast fortune he inherited and strove to make something of himself. He became the hero, Ozymandias.

When vigilantes became illegal, Veidt publicly revealed his identity and made a fortune off his image. He then set about his next plan to “save” the world. Believing that the world was headed towards an inevitable nuclear war, Ozymandias sought to unite the people of earth against a seemingly outside threat. To do this, he orchestrates a plot to secretly murder millions of people in order for the survivors to put aside their differences and make peace.

While his vast wealth and genius intellect may be Ozymandias’ most apparent strengths, what really sets him apart from other villains is his drive. Regardless of how heinous his actions may seem, Ozymandias genuinely believes that it is for the greater good. What makes him even more dangerous is the fact that even enemies cannot help but admit it too.

4. Ra’s Al Ghul

With a centuries long lifespan thanks to the Lazarus Pit, Ra’s Al Ghul has mastered all forms of combat and has sharpened his intellect to it’s very peak. Unlike most supervillains, he and Batman share a mutual respect for one another in spite of their different goals. Image: DC

Ra’s Al Ghul is the leader of The League of Shadows and a highly skilled assassin, whose goal it is to restore the Earth to a more natural state by killing off most of humanity. He is both an enemy and a mentor to Batman and the two share a very interesting dynamic.

Ra’s, although somewhere around 450–750 years old, does not have any inherent superpowers. Unlike other immortal characters, Ra’s immortality is not something he naturally has but is something he achieves by using the Lazarus Pit. Over the years, the pit has been used to stop him from growing old and is able to revive him any time he is killed. Theoretically, the pit does the same for anyone who makes use of it.

Thanks to his extremely long lifespan, Ra’s has had the time to build both his body and mind. An elite assassin with literal centuries of training, Ra’s can effortlessly wield almost any weapon. Ra’s is also very intelligent with a particular talent for history and problem solving. His long life has allowed him to build a vast network of contacts that have allowed him to safeguard his Lazarus Pits and aid him in his schemes. His extensive use of the pits have also allowed him to slow its maddening effects on his body.

Unlike most villains in this list, Ra’s has a genuine respect for his enemy, Batman. The Dark Knight in turn also reciprocates those feelings. Despite knowing Batman’s true identity, Ra’s does not disclose it but instead wishes for Bruce Wayne to be his successor. To make matters even more complicated, Batman was in a relationship with Ra’s’ daughter Talia and is the father of Ra’s grandson Damian Wayne. With Ra’s still trying to kill off the population of earth, it’s likely that he won’t be invited to any family dinners any time soon.

3. Green Goblin/ Norman Osborn

When under the influence of the Goblin Serum, The Green Goblin is a psychopathic killer who uses his enhanced strength and combat equipment to terrorise Spiderman. Without the drug, Norman Osborn is a cunning businessman bent on pushing his own selfish interests. Insane or not, Osborn is evil. Image: Marvel

Arguably Spiderman’s greatest enemy, the Green Goblin is equal parts malice and insanity. The Goblin has terrorized Spiderman on a personal level, going after his loved ones and even killing his love interest Gwen Stacey. On many occasions, he has even bested Spiderman one on one. While he has in more recent times temporarily acquired powers, Osborn is best remembered for the times where he doesn’t have them (which is the vast majority of the time anyway).

The Green Goblin was “born” when Norman Osborn attempted to test his company’s performance enhancers on himself. While it did boost his strength and intelligence, it also drove the already mentally fragile Osborn to insanity. As the Goblin, Osborn is also equipped with an entire arsenal of Oscorp’s latest technology, most noticeably his pumpkin bombs and glider.

Although initially presented as a “Jekyll and Hyde” type character, readers would soon discover that even without the maddening effects of the Goblin Formula, Norman Osborn was just as evil, if not worse than his deranged alter ego. Aside from being a ruthless businessman with significant political influence, Osborn is also an absentee and abusive parent. While many villains may be able to claim that they defeated The Avengers, Norman Osborn takes it a step further by taking it over and leading it as the original Iron Patriot.

Whether it be the madness of the Green Goblin or the cunning of Norman Osborn, few villains have been able to wreak as much terror on the Marvel Universe let alone without any in-born powers. Sometimes, a bit of madness, some cool tech and a whole lot of money is all you need to bring chaos to the world.

2.Lex Luthor

Bent on humiliating Superman and other similar heroes, Lex Luthor has often relied on his intelligence, wealth and popularity to secretly commit his evil deeds. He has saved the world, cured diseases and even became the President of the United States simply to spite and discredit the Man of Steel. Image: DC

Lex Luthor has it all. Billions of dollars, remarkable intelligence and the love and support of the public at large. If he wanted to rule the world, the people would give it to him on a silver platter. After all, to the average joe, he is a generous philanthropist and a role model to all. In many ways, Luthor is the very best humanity could offer. Unfortunately, he’s no Superman.

With an unrivalled ego and a desire to be seen as the world’s only savior, Luthor does not see the Man of Steel as a hero but rather as an uninvited visitor intruding on his own ideal world. Thanks to his vast wealth and genius mind, Luthor has found all kinds of ways to humiliate, discredit and even destroy his arch nemesis. Even when he is caught for his crimes, Luthor is never delivered to justice thanks to his influence. Most of the time, his evil deeds go completely unnoticed and he retains his popularity among the general public.

Luthor’s cunning mind is a weapon in itself and he often uses his status to organize groups of other supervillains to do his bidding. However, when the need calls for it, Luthor himself is not afraid to face Superman in a head on fight. With a battle suit of his own creation and a trusty supply of Kryptonite that he always keeps on his person, Luthor shows that a smart enough earthling is more than a match for the last son of Krypton.

Ironically, Luthor’s jealousy of Superman and his unquenchable thirst for attention has also caused him to do his share of good. Luthor has helped save the Earth on numerous occasions and has used his fortune to solve problems like disease and hunger. Most of the time this is either to further his own interests or to discredit the heroes he stands against. It goes to show that sometimes, the only way for a villain to triumph over a hero is to do their job better than them.

1. The Joker

Although he has never had a consistent origin story or secret identity, The Joker has endured and pushed on as Batman’s arch-nemesis. One of the most iconic characters of all time, The Joker has been reinvented on multiple occasions. However at his very core, he is a representation of chaos and anarchy. Image: DC

Closing out this list with yet another Batman villain, The Joker can also be said to be the most iconic supervillain of all time. With no definite origin story (or secret identity for that matter), The Clown Prince of Crime is in many ways, the very definition of chaos and anarchy.

The polar opposite of the dark, brooding Batman, The Joker is often loud and unpredictable. So unpredictable is The Joker that most heroes will never know which version of the villain they’ll be dealing with on any particular day. He could be a lighthearted prankster just trying to make life difficult for everyone or he could be mass murdering maniac at the flick of a switch.

Aside from his unpredictable mood, The Joker is also a self taught technological expert with a particular focus on chemicals and toxins. Thanks to his extensive work on his Joker venom laughing gas and from his own exposure to the chemicals that deformed him, he is resistant against many poisons. On top of that, The Joker is an extremely dangerous combatant. With moves that are impossible to predict and a threshold for pain far exceeding that of the average human, The Joker is both durable and deadly.

One thing most people often overlook about The Clown Prince of Crime is his intelligence. Although he is undoubtedly insane and difficult to understand, The Joker is deceptively intelligent. Depending on each particular incarnation of the character, The Joker’s intelligence has made him a competent gangster mastermind or a nihilistic expert with a thorough understanding of how to break the human psyche. Behind the manic laughter, green hair and red lips, The Joker calculates every seemingly random move he makes and knows exactly what he is getting out of it. In his mind, he is the only sane person in a world full of lunatics and perhaps that is what makes him the most dangerous non super-powered villain.

The Joker is one of the most enduring characters in popular culture and has been played in all kinds of ways. Whether as a straight up psychopath, a calculating villain, a goofy prankster, a sympathetic figure or a sick individual, none of these ever changing personas have ever been inconsistent with the overall character of The Joker: the embodiment of unbridled freedom and the chaos that follows it.

That does it for this list. If you made it this far, let me thank you for taking the time to read this! Like I said earlier, this list is influenced by a bit of personal preference so feel free to disagree and please let me hear your different thoughts too! Until then, take care!
