Sweet Girl

Parents and their children, where do we stop and they begin.

Sweet Girl tells the story of a devoted family man Ray Cooper, embarking on a bloody, violent pursuit of revenge and justice against the ultimate Big Bad pharmaceutical company Bioprime, responsible for pulling a potentially life saving drug: Sparrow, from the market just before his wife dies from cancer. The movie starts with a man hunt for Ray Cooper by the FBI ending with him on the roof at PNC Park stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and jumping off into the waterways. Then the story jumps back to years earlier.

We’re taken to a time of when Ray Cooper (played by Jason Momoa) and his daughter Rachel (played by Isabela Merced) are with his wife Amanda Copper (played by Adria Arjona) whose cancer has relapsed. Ray is a blue collar worker with limited means and gives everything, mortgaging the home, working double shifts, selling what he can to pay for his wife’s care. To help cope with the pain they are facing, we see Ray and Rachel training often in a gym with Rachel showing herself to be quite a capable fighter.

Ray and Rachel are given news of a generic drug called Sparrow from the non-generic drug Infirma by Bioprime that can help in Amanda’s treatment and are given hope that she will survive. Suddenly they found that the drug has been pulled off the market by the pharmaceutical company Bioprime. Bioprime pays off the generic drug’s manufacturer to indefinitely delay release, in order for Bioprime to maintain its monopoly on the treatment.

In discovering this Ray lets the CEO of Bioprime Simon Keeley (played by Justin Bartha) that if his wife dies, that it will be his death sentence. We are then taken to 6 months later where Ray and Rachel are working through their grief and the aftermath of Amanda Cooper’s death. There are hospital bills that are overdue, and anger issues to work through. Ray suddenly gets a call from a reporter doing a story on Bioprime that can expose them and bring them to just. He leaves to meet with him only to have the reporter killed and Ray mortally wounded. We are then taken to 2 years later where we find Rachel sparring in the gym, unable to get over the grief that she has experienced and trained to be an even better fighter.

There is also the introduction of an assassin Vinod Shah (played by Raza Jaffrey) who isn’t working for the pharmaceutical company, but a different employer showing that there is a bigger conspiracy involved that really shouldn’t be unexpected. This is a mystery for you to figure out. This turn of events now puts not only Ray in danger but also Rachel.

At this point in the movie there is a very strange and unexpected twist that I being an honorary member of the Movie Reviewers Guild am not allowed to divulge (giving out spoilers is a serious no no). Not to worry though, there are actually enough clues in the movies to figure it out before hand.

Jason Momoa gives a splendid performance quite different than what we are use to seeing him in with most of his roles being an action superhero other than in Stargate Atlantis. The movie is worth seeing just to see how well he as an actor has a wide range that obviously has been taken for granted. With plenty of action and fight scenes this movie will not disappoint as we love to see Jason get physical. Other than that it’s the twist and the action scenes that is really worth watching.

The ending does explain the unexpected twist in the movie which is only satisfying if you love the idea of revenge being passed on from one family member to the next with Ray getting his daughter involved. In the end this movie just shows the cycle that can be created if we as parents aren’t careful with what we show and teach our children.

Final Thoughts: Is it fair to teach our children to seek revenge when it may cost them their lives? The cycle of hate can be a dangerous thing if that is the only thing that we pass on to the next generation. Let’s make sure we pass on something more meaningful.
