A spy dad, an assassin mom, and a telepathic child. Together they form a family whilst hiding their true identities from each other. That is the intriguing premise of the enthralling and delightfully funny Spy x Family (pronounced “Spy Family”,) easily the runaway anime hit of 2022.

Based on Tatsuya Endo’s best-selling Japanese manga (2019-present,) the story follows Westalis master spy Twilight who has to create a fake family for a war-preventing mission in neighboring country Ostania. Under the alias “Loid Forger,” he adopts orphan Anya not knowing she is a telepath and marries city hall clerk Yor unaware she is a skilled assassin codenamed Thorn Princess!

Adapted by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan’s first three seasons) and CloverWorks (The Promised Neverland,) the brilliantly illustrated Spy x Family succeeds in interlacing political espionage and national strife with comic turns and cuteness overload. Yet, subtle messaging about the ills of war and the importance of family support and influence are not skimmed over either.

The show’s trump card is undoubtedly the leading character trio. Debonair dad Loid is a world-weary spy who just want to make the world a better place; ditzy but affable mom Yor is a hard worker be it as wife, mother, sister or assassin; and most of all, little Anya is a bona fide hit thanks to her über cuteness and meme-worthy facial expressions.

So far, the first half of Spy x Family’s 25-episode first season has been quite faithful to the manga, which to date has 10 volumes with 26.5 million copies sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling mangas of all-time.

With the second cour currently streaming—and delivering the much-anticipated introduction of Bond the fluffy, future-seeing canine—here are 10 other Spy x Family manga scenarios we would love to see animated as well!

(Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead.)

10 'Spy x Family' manga scenes we want to see in the Anime:

1. Yor’s Culinary Secret

[Credit: Spy x Family manga Mission 24]

Yor's cooking leaves much to be desired but in Mission 24, arguably one of the manga’s most hilarious chapters, we learnt that she has been secretly taking cooking lessons from an unlikely source. Her determination to be a better cook (and failure to do so) is rib-tickling to say the least, as she has to endure many mishaps before she could churn out one decent dish. With the second cour’s new opening/closing sequences showing much good food in the Forger home, maybe just maybe, Yor finally masters this craft!

2. The Pain-in-the-Butt First Date

In Extra Mission 2 (or Mission 17.5,) Yor was unfortunately shot in the butt during her “night job”. Mistaking her pained looks as being upset with their marriage arrangement which would comprise his mission, Loid decides to lavish Yor with a date night. But as it hurts Yor to be seated, comical situations abound where she literally “stood” Loid up in public. If her grimaces here get animated, Yor will give Anya’s memes a good run for their money!

3. Loid In the Park with Yor

[Credit: Spy x Family manga Mission 35]

In Mission 35, after a climatic drinking session in a bar where an intoxicated Yor brutally kicks Loid on the chin after a hilarious misunderstanding, we find an unconscious Loid lying on Yor’s lap on a park bench. Awakened by the lullaby Yor was humming, Loid shares loving memories of his mother, before dissolving Yor's fears when he assures her that he has no intention of replacing her as Anya’s guardian, or as his wife with his (obnoxious) WISE colleague Fiona Frost. A truly “awww” moment, this.

4. Painful Childhood Memories

From Missions 62 to 62.3, we get to know why Loid’s life goal is to make “a world where kids don’t cry.” When Ostania first attacked Westalis, the loss of family and friends hit young Loid hard. One of the manga’s most somber segments, Loid’s relationships with his mom (good) and dad (bad), his childhood friends, the chance meeting with Franky, and how he was eventually recruited by WISE to be trained as a spy, are all laid bare in this heart-wrenching backstory.

5. Shopping Till They Drop

[Credit: Spy x Family manga Mission 36]

Mistakenly assuming that Anya fancies their classmate Damian—son of Loid’s mission target Donovan Desmond—Becky decides to help her clueless friend shop for clothes and accessories that will catch the lad’s eye in Mission 36. Watching the two girls shopping at a fancy mall and parading high fashion on the show would be a blast. Seeing the disgruntled reactions of Martha, Becky’s long-suffering chauffeur-cum-chaperon, as Anya and Becky shop till they drop would be just as priceless.

6. Dangerous Mind Games

In Mission 42, Anya learns about the mythical “Pastry of Knowledge” said to enable any Eden Academy student who consumes it become an Imperial Scholar. With the last piece up for grabs, she and Damian indulge in an intense winner-takes-all card game where Ms Forger almost exposes her telepathic abilities when the agitated lad suspects she can read minds as she could predict his every move. Anya’s emotional rollercoaster of expressions is guaranteed to churn out a whole new set of memes!

7. A Killer Cruise

Assigned to protect a VIP woman and her child on the cruise ship Princess Lorelei in Missions 44 to 55, Yor goes full Atomic Blonde on board as she takes on a Gotham City-like gallery of rogues and villains single-handedly. Meanwhile Loid, on the same cruise with a restless Anya, manages to “save the world” yet again despite being ordered to rest. One of the longest plotlines in the manga, this action-packed story arc—if earmarked for telecast—will probably not surface till Season 2.

8. Forger Family Fun

After completing the Princess Lorelei assignment, Yor is able to spend quality time with Loid and Anya in Mission 56. For the first time in forever, the Forger family gets to indulge in recreational activities together like ziplining and snorkeling, but not without unintentional incidents such as when Yor, forgetting her super strength, propels a surfboard-riding Anya like a rocket onto a huge wave. Luckily, superdad Loid is at hand to save the day. A lovely chapter that sees the fake family having great fun together.

9. Best Man Contest

In Mission 68, Yor’s possessive brother Yuri pays her a visit but envy gets the better of him yet again when he sees Yor and Loid being chummy with each other. Seethed, he challenges Loid to see who is better in doing chores such as dish-washing and grocery-shopping. His incredulous shouting aside, it will be fun to see Yuri’s out-of-control aggressiveness contrasting with Loid’s unearthly calmness, as an apologetic Yor watches on the side.

10. Queen of the Courts

It is a tough choice: to see Yor thrashing the spiteful Fiona out of the ballpark in an impromptu tennis match in Mission 34, or watch her destroys net, set and match during a volleyball game in Mission 65, where Mrs Forger also finds herself joining the inner circle of one Melinda Desmond a.k.a Damian’s mom. Truth be told, it would be brilliant to see both sequences as the spritely Yor doing superhuman stuff—a la her Spider-man-like prowess in Episode/Mission 13 of the anime—is nothing but a LOL thrill!

I loved the article! I can't wait for season 2 and the new Spy Family movie to come out. I believe the movie will take place on the cruise the whole family is attending. Take care!
