People like a good story.

Purple Violets is a 2007 film. Four friends from college reunite after many years. Unhappy with her marriage, Patti forms a bond with Brian who is who longs for romance. Amidst their conflicts with love, Patti struggles with a book she is writing.

Purple Violets evoke multiple definitions of what love is in a genuine telling. Highlighting the tender moments and their messy endeavors, this film talks about how you need to make decisions for your own benefit about relationships.

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in the genuine chemistry between the main actors. Selma Blair and Patrick Wilson made a sweet couple. They really took their time to study this relationship. Unlike the other relationships in the film, Patti and Brian are the healthiest couple. They don’t bicker or stalk one another to force a relationship.

I have only seen Patrick Wilson in horror films like The Conjuring and Insidious franchise, so seeing him in a romantic comedy was a refreshing break. Blair was also wonderful in her character’s journey, making decisions that feel right for her.

As for Murphy and Kate (Edward Burns and Debra Messing), they spend most of the film bickering and lacking boundaries. Kate says several times that she is not interested in being in a relationship with Michael who continues to stalk her outside of her apartment or at work.

In contrast to Blair’s performance who was more vulnerable, Messing’s portrayal was more complex. These traits made their friendship more compelling.

The worst character in the film is Chazz (Donal Logue). He is self-absorbed, obnoxious, and horrible. He even gaslights poor Patti and negatively rebukes her stories. Chazz is the best example of the type of marriage you don’t want to end up in.

Purple Violets has the best example of a male friendship. Brian and Murphy are constantly talking and asking for one another’s advice about their relationships. More films need to showcase male friendships like this.

The dialogue is good in this film. It’s a lot of back-and-forth conversations about relationships, opinions, or other matters but it's what makes the film feel real. The script blends humor and signifies the essence of human relationships. Relationships are so important, especially as you grow older. This is the time when you should take advantage of them.

Edward Burns chose an important message for Purple Violets. Burns creates an inviting atmosphere that helps audiences connect with the characters on a personal level. Relationships need time. They’re challenging because you’re letting someone into your personal life. Respect people’s ideas on relationships and when they need time to think.

Writers will identify with Purple Violets as the main characters are authors and busy themselves writing novels. I have always had a passion for writing. Followed by lovely locations, like a beach which is the best place to write. And let’s not forget the hustle and bustle of New York City, featuring iconic locations to enhance visual appeal to viewers.

This independent film delivers a refreshing take on relationships elevating the overall quality of the movie. Normally, romance films don’t appeal to me but Purple Violets has a different atmosphere and message to viewers. It explores familiar themes that we’ve seen in other romance films but from a fresh perspective.

Purple Violets remind us that it is never too late to pursue our dreams and seek fulfillment. True love and genuine connections can be found in unexpected places.

Put Purple Hearts on your list. It’s a delightful romance film that has more layers than you’d expect.
