Night Sky is a 2022 Amazon Prime series. Franklin and Irene York, an aging married couple, have the capacity to travel to a deserted planet from the shed in their backyard. Meanwhile, a mother and daughter are on the run to safety across the country.

Night Sky is a very original Amazon Prime series. It’s a mix of sci-fi and pertains to themes about growing old and change. An excellent concept, it’s the subplot of the series that I didn’t find necessary at all.

Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons made a lovely couple. Franklin and Irene have spent decades together through ups and downs. I love the way Spacek and Simmons cemented their loving bond. Their relationship was the best part of the series, bestowing a proud example of a loving relationship. Growing old isn’t an easy venture, but it’s not where the adventure stops.

Night Sky is a study of human interactions. Jude (Chai Hansen) is a mysterious character who has experienced regret. I loved the way Irene interacted with him. Enduring sad events, the series hits on relatable events that we have all faced at any point in our lives. Mental health is a crucial element in the story.

I wasn’t fond of Byron (Adam Bartley). His storyline was pivotal though. Oftentimes, we don’t get along with neighbors. Generation plays a factor, too. Though, his plotline was a distraction from the main story.

That’s how I related to Denise (Kiah McKinnon). Not happy with her life, sometimes you just have to change things up. We don’t have to stick to the same path as family members or as society intends us to do.

The only aspect of Night Sky that I was unimpressed by was the storyline with Stella and Toni (Julieta Zylberberg and Rocio Hernandez). The story was another series entirely. It had a completely different atmosphere. Even though the stories were interconnected in the end, they would have worked without them. Night Sky is about Franklin and Irene.

Their storyline interrupts the main themes, like mental health and the whole sci-fi scenario. A few times, it made references back to Irene and Franklin’s story, but the whole angle was unnecessary. Even when writing about it now, I completely forgot that they were in the series.

Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connelly created a unique sci-fi series. It’s very easy to become absorbed in this story. All generations can relate to it. Nothing is explained. The show-and-don’t-tell rule is used to the best of its abilities. We don’t need an explanation of how this space world came to be.

The special effects were impressive. I always liked when the characters traveled to the space world. The visual effects for the starry night sky were fantastic. It was a peaceful area. I also liked the approach to the separation of space between a window pane.

Night Sky will leave viewers with several questions. In my opinion, writers should have focused on Franklin and Irene’s story alone instead of including a filler story that slowed everything down.

The final episode ends on an ambiguous note, but I almost wish that the series would conclude here instead of developing another season. It’s best not to ruin the tone of Night Sky. Right from the start, this show likes to make viewers interpret what the lives of these characters have been like.

I recommend that you check out Night Sky on Amazon Prime. The episodes kept me hooked. The series is something new to enjoy.
