My Review of "This is Paris"

This is Paris is a documentary on a pretty iconic person in today's pop culture. Watching this reminded me how influential Paris Hilton is. She's not even that old and she's accomplished so much and has some skeletons in her closet that we surprisingly didn't know of. This movie kind of pulls back the curtains in the life of Paris and makes us empathize with the plights that she had experienced in the past.

The documentary starts off with a little opening of who Paris Hilton is. Today Paris isn't in the spotlight as she once was. She used to be the biggest pop star in the world at one time and in some sense she's still pretty well known. Still she's hardly as popular as she was back in the day and we find out that this was in fact on purpose.

We're reminded that she was pretty much the pioneer to a lot of the things that are pretty common place today. She started the reality TV show craze, the perfect selfie pictures, being an influencer, and the list goes on. A lot of the things that we do today were in fact popularized by her in the early 2000s.

They go into some of the craziness that she has to dealt with when it came to the popularity that she experienced in the past. There was an infamous sex tape in the past that in fact destroyed her back in the day contrary to what people thought at the time. Today we now realize the error in our ways because of the me too movement. We improperly judged her when she was in fact the victim at the time. There was a young woman who was being destroyed by society for something she technically not even a bad thing.

Some of the stuff that they talk about in the film make me question a lot of the things that society did to her back in the day and she's become troubled by these issues.

They dive even deeper into her psyche as the film continues. We soon learn the motivations behind why she was the rebellious kid that she appeared to be. It's pretty crazy because they originally make you think that the fame and the unfortunate situations she was in was the causes of her stresses and her issues with relationships. Little did we know they'd continue to peel away and get even deeper.

She continues to talk about this recurring nightmare that she has every night and originally I thought it was because of the fame issues she deals with from the early 2000s but apparently it wasn't. The movie then reveals itself to be talking about a deeper issue that had happened even earlier in her life.

Paris at this point seems more like a the trojan horse to get us interested in the film only to be baited to another story. The real issue was that when she was a young child she was put into a boarding school that was quite abusive. They were knowingly abusive but of course none of the kids would reveal the abuses that they had suffered all of those years ago.

The truth finally comes out and they find additional colleagues Paris had at the boarding school. They're able to substantiate her story with additional terrible testimonies about their time at this horrible school. This was a horrible revelation into seeing why Paris had chosen all of her bad decisions. There was way too much going on in her psychologically for her to grasp.

In the end, this was a gripping documentary that will have you fascinated from start to finish. For those of you that remember the early 2000s, this will especially be a delight because it's a blast from the past. I have to give this documentary an 8 out of 10. The sequence of the film was very well thought out and I loved the pacing.
