My Review of "The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult"

It's the end of the Naked Gun trilogy. If you don't know your late 80s and early 90s references you might get lost watching it.

The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult is the final chapter to The Naked Gun trilogy. It came out back in 1994 and as such it is very much a product of its time. Those that might not have too much pop culture knowledge of the late 80s and early 90s will not get half of the jokes that fly by this time around. If you get it though... it's a little more stratifying watching this old movie.

It all starts out with marriage issues with Frank and Jane. This movie takes place not too long after the events of the second movie. As promised Frank has promised to get out of Police Squad to focus his time with Jane. He's become a stay at home husband while Jane is working as an attorney of sorts.

The problem with their relationship is that she wants to build a family while Frank can't really get into the mood to have sex anymore. They're playing on the stereotypical gender role reversal of the time. Again those that didn't grow up in this generation might have forgotten the type of gender roles back in the day.

A lot of the jokes again relate to sex, gender roles and misunderstandings. I felt that this one played it up a bit better than the previous movie. There were actual punchlines in this one rather than the previous movie with just scenarios.

Frank and Jane finally take a bit of a break from one another when Jane finds out that Frank is helping out Police Squad once again. With Jane gone Frank goes back to help out with the case he got in trouble for. They carefully placed the story to lead back to one another in a clever way. I thought this was pretty good planning.

To help with the case Frank has to go undercover and get in with this gangster named Rocco. His mission is to figure out what Rocco's planning and thwart the plan. Of course this involves all of Franks usual crazy antics and we're all in for the crazy ride.

Like I mentioned earlier, you really have to understand 80s and 90s references to really get this movie. Fortunately for me this was a nostalgic ride back in time. I remember these jokes falling flat back in the day because it was kind of corny but watching it today they felt pretty on brand.

Most of the famous things you'll catch right away. There's Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Goonies and Beavis and Butthead. Then there's more obscure references like the Crying Game, Sally Field's Oscar acceptance speech, The Untouchables and many more. I remember a lot of these things and it just felt more fresh in my head when they played out the jokes. There's also countless cameos of the time. Most of them aren't really A-lister cameos but I definitely recognized them and their significance for the movie.

Still there are a lot of funny jokes throughout this movie that still had me howling with laughter. For example there was a scene they built up where Frank was supposed to have a romantic night with Jane. Prior to their date Frank attempts to help the police case by doing some undercover work. What he didn't know was that he had to go to a fertility clinic and give samples. Everything is absolutely absurd as it sounds and even crazier when you see it on screen.

All of the cast is back as well. We have consistency with their reactions and demeanor throughout the series. It's like coming back to a group of old friends and hearing their stories again.

Overall, I had a great time with this one. It was actually a better time than I had with the second but not nearly as great as the first. Still it was a great ride down memory lane. I remember why I had such a good time with this movie in the past. I will have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. The movie is quite dated now but a certain generation can still enjoy it. I am one of the selected generations.
