My Review of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"

This is Star Trek back in form but unfortunately it's last iteration with the original crew.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country came out back in 1991. By then the cast and crew had kind of outgrown their roles as crew members of the Enterprise. Still the last movie was kind of a disappointment so that's why it was a surprise to see this movie was a lot better. It's truly back to Star Trek form and it was very entertaining.

The movie starts off with the introduction of our characters. Everyone's aged quite a bit from the previous movie. Sulu is now captaining his own ship. The rest of the crew is still on the Enterprise but it seems like their last days before retirement. There's even an introduction to a new character Valeris who is sort of a protégé to Spock.

In the opening scenes of the movie we see that there is a gigantic explosion in Klingon territory. It results in the Klingons extinction if they don't ally with the federation. Obviously the federation and the Klingons don't work well together in fact they kind of hate each other. This doesn't ring more true when it comes to Kirk. As you've seen in the previous movies he doesn't really like them.

They did kill his son after all in the third movie. Also I don't know why I just started noticing it now but Klingons kind of look like the most negative stereotype look for Asians. I'm Asian myself and I started to think it was kind of messed up with the mannerisms and the makeup that they did for Klingons. The Fu Man Chu facial hair was kind of a dead give away but there are so many other features that kind of made me go huh?

Still this movie has its heart in the right place. It's actually about diplomacy between the Federation and the Klingons. The undiscovered country is to represent the future. In this future they all hope to coexist with one another. The added racism helps propel this movie and makes us question our own prejudices.

I love the banter between the characters in this movie because they even talk about the speciesism with the dialogue of Kirk and their crew. The whole concept of human rights etc. are all human centric language. This goes the same with manners and etiquette. Again this movie came out back in 1991 and they were ahead of the times in having these discussions.

The bulk of the movie lays in solving a mystery on board of the Enterprise when Kirk and Bones are framed in an assassination of a Klingon dignitary that they were supposed to be escorting.

All the fun and humor that you come to expect from a Star Trek movie are here too. This goes especially during the imprisonment scenes and the search for our traitors on the ship. This time the jokes are actually funny and don't feel awkward like in the previous movie.

These characters are so lovable and after 6 movies we've all come to love them and want to see more. Unfortunately this was the last for the ensemble cast and you can tell with some of the dialogue in the movie. You can tell they were anticipating to have this movie as it's final swansong to the franchise.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. They have a few amazing scenes that will have you laughing and clenching your fist in the air. I'm really glad they could end it on a high note like this. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. As a fan of the franchise I could watch this movie over and over again and still get pumped up.
