My Review of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"

Love it or hate it, you have to admit the art direction for this movie is slick. I still think it's got some of the coolest looking scenes.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the 8th episode of the Skywalker series. It came out back in 2017. It wasn't a long time ago but it did bring up a ton of controversy when it first came out. I remember being divided about this movie when it came out. Entertainment wise it did the trick but logic wise you kind of had to take a back step every so often.

This movie starts off right after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I don't know why I'm reviewing these movies in random order but I am. Rey had finally found the legendary Luke Skywalker. Finn had been critically injured and Kylo Ren had just killed his father to further cement himself with the dark side.

The new order is just at the heels of our rebel heroes and Poe is about to attack them head on with his X-Wing in space. He goes at them in like the ace pilot that he is so that the rebel bombers can make their attack. This is probably one of the biggest highlight scenes in the movie. I basically rewatched this movie for this opening scene alone.

I love the scene with Rose's sister Paige. She's barely in the movie but this scene always gets to me. The rebels are outgunned and all the bombers have been destroyed except for Paige's ship. She tries to deploy the bombs but gets knocked out. She does all she can to get the bombs to be released. Though it's not known that it's the force or not she was able to get the remote and send the bombs down on the New Order.

Very slick actions scenes like this are sprinkled throughout this movie. The art style and drama that comes with each of these scenes are amazing. Each with such visually striking colors of contrast and dynamic camera angles. This could have been any other movie and people would still be talking about these specific scenes.

There is another very well planned out space battle in the middle of the movie that will have you gasp in drama. Beautiful fight choreography with Kylo Ren and Rey. Also that last scene where they're stuck on the old rebel base is pretty epic as well. This movie is a visual tour de force and no one talks about that when they talk about this movie.

The main thing that's focused on is the somewhat convoluted story telling. Yes I didn't like some of the decisions made to go to a casino to look for a codebreaker. It didn't make sense for them to be able to travel that far and come back to save a ship that's running out of gas. As I stated earlier logic has to be thrown out the window for you to truly enjoy this movie.

They tried to make Rey a challenged character in this movie rather than the Mary Sue she was made out to be in the previous movie. There was a ton of talks about balance in this movie. It seemed about everything had yin and yang to them and this was told through the deep contrast of the art direction.

The problem I had was that this movie was going somewhere and I kind of wanted to see where it was going. There were seeds planted throughout this movie that never really came to fruition. A lot of these things may never see the light because people hated this movie so much that a few of the things that happened in this movie aren't even canon anymore. It's a shame too because there were some interesting ideas. Then again there were some pretty dumb ones too. Hey you can't win them all right?

Overall, I still enjoyed this movie despite some terrible decisions that made us throw logic out the window. There are some pretty crazy scenes that save this movie for me. The art direction and style throughout this movie makes me wish they paid as much attention to this as they did the story. As a movie as a whole I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. There was a ton of potential with this movie and I really wish they had time to go through some more editing before they released this one.
