My Review of "Spider-Man: Homecoming"

A revisit of the new MCU Spider-Man but this time in 4K.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the start of the Tom Holland era of the Spider-Man franchise. I watched this movie just a little before I started writing reviews so I was startled that I didn't review this movie yet. Going back to this movie in 4k was fantastic.

The movie starts off with a little bit of a home video from Peter Parker. He's very green to the superhero thing and I guess he's just recently discovered his powers.

There's a lot of murkiness with this opening. Why would he be creating these videos that seem to be aimed at a wider audience when he's trying to keep his identity secret. He's also supposed to be pretty new to this superhero thing so I'm shocked that he can figure out his new Spider-Man suit so quickly.

Even the throwback of him videoing himself before he makes his big appearance in Captain America: Civil War was a little off. At least the tone was kind of messed up because in the video he seems very giddy, excited and naïve. He then swings into action calm cool and collected. That's a stark difference of what he is from the rest of this movie.

The story then branches into Peter's desire to help out the Avengers once again. Unfortunately for him Tony Stark knows he's too green to get into major action. He's a liability and he needs to get some more crime fighting experience in order to join the team. Then you might ask why Tony asked him to join them to fight Captain America in the first place? No one knows but we're just going with it.

Meanwhile, there's a man named Adrian who is salvaging alien technology from the remnants of the original Avengers movie. His story is engaging and grounded. They're just a group of guys trying to make a dollar off of the technology of unknown aliens that had attempted to invade Earth. If they're not going to do it someone else is going to do it. He even mentions in the movie that people like Tony Stark do it all the time and built empires from it.

Adrian is basically the bad guy but you kind of get where he's coming from. Basically Peter finds out about Adrian's organization and does anything in his power to stop Adrian's group of hired thugs.

To make matters more difficult for Peter he has his Aunt May, his best friend Ned and the rest of high school to contend with. This is one of the few times they emphasize a superhero's work life management. With no one knowing his identity this could be very difficult. Of course some people are liable to know his secret. In fact his secret gets leaked a few times.

As a high school student he's got a lot on his mind. He's got a girl that he has a crush on. There's a student academics team that he's part of. He's being bullied by a kid named Flash. His friend Ned wants to spend quality time with him. As a sophomore he's still trying to figure what he wants to do after high school too.

Despite all that his one ultimate goal is to become an Avenger at any cost. So he neglects a lot of things and I guess he learns some valuable life lessons from this.

To me this feels like a great introduction to our hero. I got a good sense of where he was with the knowledge of his own abilities. We also have all the usual Spider-Man tropes we've come to love without having it shoved down our throats. The connection to the Marvel universe is also very integral to the overall story of this movie too. It's crazy how integrated this movie is to the MCU.

This is also a very cool movie to watch over again. You see how young everyone is and you just can't believe it. 2017 doesn't feel like it's so long ago but there have been big changes to all of the characters and actors alike. It's also a feeling of innocence because the whole world hasn't experienced the blip yet.

Watching this movie in 4K made the visuals great but a little too great. You can see some of the green screen filters that they used to make the movie. Some of the characters shown look a lot more cartoon like as well. I remember seeing this movie in 3D and I still kind of prefer the 3D version over the 4K.

Overall, this is a fantastic engaging movie with a few flaws. You have to throw your logic out the window whenever you see superhero movies but sometimes lacking continuity and consistency can throw you off. I still really enjoyed this movie and watching it again I had a warm sense of innocence from knowing what will happen to them years from now. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It is a movie that you can revisit on occasion.
