My Review of "Secret Invasion"

It couldn't quite become a blockbuster movie but still awkward as a short series.

Secret Invasion has just released exclusively on Disney Plus in 2023. There's a lot to like about this series but a lot of question marks as well. I think they made the best with the material they were provided. The thing is that it doesn't really feel like it helps aid the ultimate goal of the recent phase of the Marvel cinematic universe.

The series starts off a like an espionage show. It gives off the same vibe as the Captain America series. We're getting back to the groundwork of the politics behind the superheroes. Then it isn't as well. Nick Fury is back on Earth after being on a remote alien space station for some time.

There's a whole bunch of things happening on Earth that involve a shape shifting race known as the Skrulls. You'll only remember them if you remember the movie Captain Marvel. That's been some time ago. Already you're starting to try to remember who's who and what's what. Don't worry they do a pretty good job in getting you back up to date though.

Amongst the Skrulls there seems to be some friction. You see Nick met with the Skrulls when they first inhabited Earth. He had promised them that if they helped him complete some missions that he'd help them find their own home to live on. Years turn to decades and Nick has never fulfilled his promise. The Skrulls are starting to smarten up to Nick's sneaky ways. He's using them to help his own career.

Throughout the years Nick has moved up in ranks as a result of the Skrulls espionage help. Now it's time for payback. If Nick can't find them a planet to live on then they're going to take Earth for their own. Kind of makes sense to me. Although, if they really wanted to they should have done it a long time ago.

Nobody except for a certain few people know who Skrulls are and their abilities make them the best for espionage or even taking over people. In the back of my mind I was wondering why it would be so hard for them to take over Earth. Then again this is a comic book series. I always have to remember to shut off my brain when watching these type of shows.

I had to shut off my brain a lot with this series to make it fun. There are a lot of nonsensical things that happen in this series that made me pretty angry. The Skrulls are powerful enough as they already are but they want to gain even more powers? This show gets into the territory of focusing too much on super powers than focusing on the political story that they had started in the beginning. It's kind of all over the place closer to the end.

That's not to say that they didn't have a lot of interesting ideas. There is a ton of potential throughout this series. In some ways I think the original intent of this show was to have superheroes involved but none of them are present in this one. It's strictly a Nick Fury story. As such did think it would have been best on focusing on the political side of things.

Still there are some fun moments and some cool things that they added to the Marvel mythos. All of it feels like it's for naught though. The main Marvel phase feels like it's supposed to centered on this Kang character and this whole Skrull situation on Earth feels like a diversion or an introduction to a loophole to finally defeat Kang in a future movie.

Overall, this series was kind of all over the place. They could have created a movie instead of a short series seeing how short it was. It would have done fine as a direct to streaming video. This series didn't know what it wanted to be. There is some fun to be had with it though so don't totally dismiss it. I will have to give this one a 6 out of 10. I feel like the creators of this series were handcuffed and really restricted from what their true vision of this series was going to be.
