My Review of "Men in Black 3"

Wow I didn't expect this sequel to be this good.

Men in Black 3 came out back in 2012. It's about a decade since it came out and a decade since the previous movie. Yeah it took them 10 years to create a new sequel. What's unexpected about that is that I was surprised they even made a third volume. If you saw my review of the second movie you'd realize that I hated it. I had real apprehensions to watch this movie. It was that bad. Luckily this movie was an about face.

The movie starts off with a very seductive female entering what seems to be a prison with a cake. It's reminiscent to the old cartoons where you break a prisoner out of jail with tools inside a cake. This movie of course puts a spin to everything since it's Men in Black.

All of this is to introduce us to the new big bad guy Boris. He's been in prison for 40 years thanks to Kay and he wants revenge. Obviously, Boris breaks out of the prison and devises a crazy plan to go to the past to eliminate Kay when he had the chance.

Meanwhile, we meet Jay and Kay who are much older than they were from the previous movies. They have the same sort of relationship with one another but all that changes when they realize their new target is Boris. Kay seems to be hiding something from Jay and this mystery is what keeps us going throughout this movie. It's a clever little nugget that they implant into the audience to keep them engaged.

When Boris does eliminate Kay in the past, Jay has to travel to the past to undo Boris' evil deeds. There's a lot of action, a lot of weirdness and a lot of fun to be had with this story.

First off they have alleviated one of my biggest complaints about the second movie. They actually make Jay a competent person. Jay has to figure out what's going on and navigate this mystery that Kay and the organization has been hiding from him. It's very well done and was really unexpected for me.

The visuals have also been overhauled. They still rely heavily on CGI work but it isn't as bad because I guess 10 years of CGI advancement will make them look a lot nicer. That last movie was really bad and didn't age well.

Practical effects and puppets were really nicely done. I loved the fact that when they go to the past all the creatures and the settings all look on brand with the time. It's pretty impressive to see all the work that they did in the art department.

I also might want to add it was quite impressive to have the younger kay act so similar to the older one. They're played by two separate actors but their mannerisms were in sync. A lot of training had to have gone in to do this and was very cool.

Being a movie that was only 10 years ago, you wouldn't think that much has changed on attitude toward things. There are a number of moments in this movie where you wonder to yourself if it would fly in today's social climate. Quite a number of jokes are very tongue in cheek but wouldn't fly by today's woke culture. It's very interesting and quite entertaining if you look back at it in this angle.

Overall, this movie shouldn't have been this good. It is leaps and bounds better than the previous movie and on par with the original in terms of originality. Yes, time travel movies will have tons of things that don't logically make sense but you're watching a family friendly science fiction movie what do you expect. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. I had no idea they could rebound like this and was very impressed.
