My Review of "Madame Web"

There is actually potential to the concept of this movie. Ultimately, it's a babysitter adventure with super powers.

Madame Web is one of the superhero movies to come out in 2024. It came out with very little fanfare and not a lot of good word of mouth. That's why it took me quite a long time to muscle up the drive to check this one out. I admit, there is a sense of intrigue when people say a movie is really bad. Publicity like that makes me wonder if it really is as bad as they say. To that, I say it's not a terrible movie. There's a ton of potential there that was never untapped.

The movie starts out in the past. A woman by the name of Constance is out in Peru trying to discover the healing effects of mysterious spiders. Unfortunately for her, once she's discovered the right spider to research, her partner double crosses her. As a result, she is murdered by her partner for the special spider.

Locals try to save her with the mysterious spiders but to no avail. Makes you wonder, the spiders were readily available what was she really researching? That's neither here nor there this is supposed to be a dumb popcorn movie so we're not going to go that deep into it. Instead, they save her baby. Yeah, I know.. let's just keep going.

Around 30 years later that baby grows up to be Cassandra, our main character. She's a paramedic and in the opening scenes with her, she has a terrible accident that causes her to die temporarily. This somehow activated some sort of psychic powers for her. She starts seeing into the future and notices everything is in Deja vu.

In the meantime, that partner that killed Cassandra's mom has become rich and powerful. He also has superpowers. The problem with him is that he's having recurring dreams of these three women that will kill him in the future. To prevent this from happening he decides that he'll do anything in his power to kill them now before they have a chance to kill him.

Cassandra can start seeing these visions of the three girls being murdered by this guy now and she's out to save them. This is generally what happens throughout the movie. The girls will do some dumb stuff because they're kids and she's there to save them each time.

Many of you will start wondering about their powers and why these powers aren't quite consistent. For example, how does the big bad guy have visions and then suddenly lose this power so conveniently. Why do they give Cassandra crazy powers closer to the end and she doesn't utilize them more often? I guess these points are valid but again this is a popcorn movie. If you treat it as such it's not the worst. It is bad though.

There is some pretty lousy dialogue throughout this movie. A lot of the acting can feel a little wooden and out of place. Some of the voices sound like they're voiced over and don't really fit the scene at points. It's actually quite awkward at times.

Though I did have some fun with this movie. At times it was so ridiculous that there was a bit of laughter coming out of me. Again if you don't take this movie seriously you can have a bit of fun with it. Some of these ridiculous scenes can kind of help with the entertainment factor of this show.

I did see some potential to this movie though. The teens should have become superheroes because I could see some pretty good stuff with them as heroes. This could very well be like a ninja turtles kind of movie or even a sailor moon type movie. If they exploited Cassandra's powers earlier on and really started to become more creative with it, they could have had a pretty cool movie.

Overall, I had a meh time with this one. I didn't hate it but I didn't really enjoy it that much either. There were a few things that were fun but in a funny kind of way and I felt a little disappointment at some of the lost potential. I couldn't recommend this one to anyone unless they're really curious. I have to give this movie a 4.5 out of 10.
