My Review of "Last Christmas"

A story about a young woman trying to get her life back together. The events just so happen to occur during Christmas.

Last Christmas is an interesting movie that came out last year in 2019. It is a lot of movie that I didn't expect. Initially I thought this was a romantic comedy but it really isn't. It's more about this woman trying to figure herself out. There's a large George Michael soundtrack behind this story and it so happens to occur during the Christmas holiday season as well.

This movie starts out with a flashback to Yugoslavia back in 1999. The main character Kate is in a choir and she's the main singer. Her family is there to watch her perform and we're getting a glimpse at how each of the characters were back in the day.

The movie then flashes forward to the year 2017 where Kate is now all grown up and in a bar still singing. She's no longer in front of a huge audience. Instead she's singing to herself. A stranger picks her up in the bar and they have what seems to be a one night stand.

Then we realize that the man that picked her up at the bar was already in a relationship and she's running for her life to get out. She arrives to her workplace and we realize her life isn't any better.

Her life seems to be a shambles as her love life isn't great and her dream career is going nowhere. The job that she's in now seems to be miserable because her boss doesn't show her any respect and she's basically screwing up everything in her life. This includes screwing up her relationships with her good friends.

Everything seems to be going downhill for Kate until she meets this mysterious man in the streets named Tom. This guy is a quirky guy that seems to be all over the place. Although he seems to have a great knowledge of things that people don't normally pay attention to.

As Kate and Tom's relationship develops, Kate starts to learn more about herself. This is where the movie kind of does a little left turn on the viewers. It started to seem more of a self exploration movie soon after Kate accepts Tom into her life. She seems more in touch with herself and learns what she's doing wrong and what she should be doing in her life.

I didn't think this movie would go that deep into the exploration of Kate's character. It's actually quite interesting because she deals with a lot of issues within herself that she didn't realize that she was fighting. There are family conflicts, relationships with friends and strangers and even her Yugoslavian heritage.

There aren't many similarities between myself with the main character Kate however I felt I could empathize with her and was able to relate to her. I thought that all of the characters in this movie were portrayed with tons of charisma. All of the characters are loved in their own ways. The actors were all so amicable that you can't resist liking them despite their horrible faults. It's kind of a weird feeling where I was thinking that I think I shouldn't like some of the characters in the movie but I couldn't help but like them. The actors did such good jobs in keeping my interest in them.

Overall, I had a great time watching this movie from start to finish. It lacked a little in the comedy area but it was an interesting feel good film. It also had a really good soundtrack that was filled with George Michael's catalog of songs. The songs really fit the mood of the film as well. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It is an enjoyable film that you can watch through but I'm not sure if you're going to go out to watch it over and over again.
