My Review of "Iron Man"

How does this movie stack up after 13 years?

Iron Man is probably the movie that started the Marvel cinematic universe back in 2008. It's a classic because it's the pioneer movie that started it all. I remember watching this movie when it first came out and I was blown away. There really wasn't a superhero movie quite like it at the time. So it was a trailblazer for future movies to come. Curiosity got the best of me and I had to give it another viewing.

For the hand full of people that haven't seen this movie before. This movie centers around a man named Tony Stark. He's this billionaire playboy with a genius IQ. His father had built a military arms enterprise in which he had recently took over. The movie starts off with a big bang as Tony is out in the field with some soldiers and all of a sudden they get attacked by enemies.

As the enemies infiltrates his defenses and takes Tony as hostage we learn more about Tony from a flashback sequence. Here we get to learn about how he became the cocky entrepreneur that he is. We learn of the few special people surrounding him and his love for all things technology.

It's weird as the enemies know just how smart he is and yet they still underestimate him. I mean they have video surveillance and they inspect everything he does in his prison cell and yet they can't clue in that he's not making missiles for them.

There are a few weird moments like that throughout the movie but really this is more of a fun rollercoaster ride than a deeply involving movie. It's popcorn fun at its finest if you don't think too hard about the movie.

Seeing this after so many Marvel movies makes me have a better appreciation for the movie. I can see how this movie had built a formula for movies to come. Not only that, a lot of the more recent Marvel movies that had come out pay a lot of homage to this particular movie.

If you've seen all of the Marvel movies you'll have to watch this movie again because there's a lot of call backs to conversations and scenes. There are obvious ones like how Jarvis is now Vision in the later movies. Then there are things that you notice that are coming up for future marvel movie instalments. For example there's a scene where Rhodes finds another Iron Man suit and he says something about how it's not time yet but soon. Then there are really subtle things in the movie for example when Tony was in prison in the cave. He has a talk with a character named Yinsen.

Yinsen is a very important character in this movie as he's the catalyst that changes Tony to the man he becomes later on in life. He has a conversation with Tony and asks him if he's got family and Tony replies no. Yinsen then laughs and says wow the man that has everything but really nothing at all. At that point Tony really reevaluates his life and the priorities in his life.

One of the odd things watching this movie is the changes in all of the characters. Some of the actors have been replaced later on in the movies. Not surprisingly enough, a lot of the actors look entirely different from what they look like now. It has been 13 years so of course they're going to look a lot different from what they did in this movie.

My worry about this movie was that the Marvel universe has released so many high caliber movies that this one would pale in comparison. I'm glad to say that it has passed the test of time. It's still a very entertaining movie and in some ways even more entertaining now because after watching all of the Marvel movies you'll start picking up on things you never did before.

Overall, I had a blast and kind of a nostalgic blast from the past. Tony Stark was still using a flip phone for crying out loud! For fans of the Marvel movies I don't even have to tell you how entertaining this movie still is. You will still have a blast watching this movie despite the lack of other Avengers in this one. I have to give it an 8 out of 10. If you haven't watched it for a while do yourself a favor and re-watch it now because it's a heck of a wild ride.
