My Review of "Bill & Ted Face the Music"

The sequel that I never thought would ever happened turned out better than I expected.

Bill & Ted Face the Music came out via streaming back in 2020 when the pandemic had hit the world the hardest. We were all quarantined with little in terms of entertainment to keep us going. I'm sad to say that I didn't see this when it first came out but I'm glad that I finally did get to check this movie out.

The movie starts off 25 years after Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey back in 1991. I still think it's pretty crazy that this new movie came out in 2020 when the Bogus Journey seemed to tidy up everything. The world is as it is today but Bill & Ted still have not created that famous song that they were supposed to have created.

Instead the movie starts off with Bill and Ted singing at Ted's little brother's wedding. It's really funny because his little brother ended up marrying Missy. For those that haven't followed Bill and Ted's trilogy up until now Missy was this girl that the duo tried to go to prom with. She would later marry Ted's father. This makes it hilarious because she's now married to Ted's younger brother. Those are the type of conundrum jokes that continually happen throughout the movie.

Even though the duo haven't found the song yet their lives aren't terrible. Still, you can tell that there is a lot of struggle with the fact that they've been working for 25 years to find the song and still haven't made it. Both Bill and Ted had married their princesses and now have grown up daughters. The daughters are hilariously enough named Billie and Thea. Obviously named after their best friends. Unfortunately there is a strain in their marital lives but the duo are oblivious about it.

The story really picks up when Rufus' daughter comes back from the future to warn Bill and Ted. They have to create the song soon or else reality as we know it will cease to exist. These two then have this brilliant idea to go to the future to find the song and bring it back. However when they go to the future they realize that their present is in danger with their wives potentially leaving them. This brings up a wild ride of them trying to fix the problems in their lives but instead ruining it even worse.

Meanwhile Billie and Thea realize that their fathers are in danger so they jump into action and try to create a band to help their father's play their most epic song. In a way I found the daughters' storyline a little more fun than the fathers'. It was clever how they were to use some of the musician's own idols to help the girls entice them to join the band. The daughters also play perfectly to the movie as their demeanor is virtually identical to Bill and Ted of the old movies.

To make matter's worse the great leader starts to believe a rumor that killing Bill and Ted could possibly be the solution to the problem. In order to do that she gets some killer robot to assassinate the duo. Another hilarious addition if you consider it's very similar to another 90's classic, The Terminator. This terminator kind of reminded me of death in the Bogus Journey movie.

There are a lot of throwback to the older movies too. You really have to see the other 2 movies, well at least Bogus Journey, to understand a lot of the movie. That's probably one of the biggest drawbacks of this movie. I think as a fan I can greatly appreciate this movie however not everyone has seen those older movies. This movie could easily lose a lot of the audience if they don't know some of these inside jokes.

The best thing this movie has going for it is that they keep with the style and atmosphere of the older movies. It doesn't skip a beat from what it was back in 1991. There's just so much joy watching this movie because it's pretty much a family film where you feel good throughout the movie. I don't think there's anything in this movie that I thought was totally out of place. It's definitely not a high art movie but for fans of the franchise like me, I greatly appreciated everything they added to this sequel.

Overall, I had a heck of a time watching this movie. I didn't really think it would ever happen or if they should have even made a sequel in the first place but I'm really glad they did. This is the type of movie that will really bring up your spirits and that's why I thought it was actually a good idea for them to bring it out last year when the pandemic hit. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. Fans of the franchise will rejoice while hopefully those that haven't seen the old movies will try to do so after watching this movie.
