My Review of "Free Guy"

Free Guy... How did I not see how clever the title of the movie was?

Free Guy is a movie that I was waiting to see back in 2020 but I guess the pandemic had other plans. Now that we're finally sort of opening up the theatres are as well. I finally got the chance to see this highly anticipated movie. It was kind of worth the wait.

It starts off sort of like the first Lego Movie. Actually it starts practically identical to the Lego Movie. There are a lot of similarities to that movie but I won't go into them too much. There's a Non-Player Character (NPC) called Guy in this huge Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) called Free Life. Guy is a very happy go lucky bank teller and lives his routine life not thinking much of it.

It's a bit absurd because there's so much crime going around in the city with video game players wreaking havoc everywhere in his city. Crime is so rampant that the citizens of Free Life all think it's a normal thing. All this comes to an end one day when Guy discovers a gamer by the name of Molotov Girl aka Millie.

He instantly falls in love with her and discovers there's more to his life. Suddenly his daily routine life doesn't satisfy him anymore. His new goal is to win the heart of this new girl. Unbeknownst to him she's a real person and he's just a character in a video game. We then pop into the real world and discover that Millie in real life has a stake in the game.

She wants to prove that the company that had created Free Life had stolen key code from her and her partner Keys. In fact, she's so convinced of this that she's trying to sue Free Life's company Soonami (haha probably a play on words to satire the game company Blizzard). At the head of Soonami is a vile money hungry sociopath by the name of Antoine.

That's pretty much where the movie really starts. It's a mix of movies that I've seen before. There's a lot of The Lego Movie, a bit of the Truman Show, and a little hint of The Matrix in there to top it off. Although there's so many familiarity to this movie I felt that they executed it pretty well. It's a very fun to watch summer movie. There's going to be a ton of people that are really going to dig this movie.

You don't have to be a gamer to have fun with this movie either. I think anyone can have fun with this movie so long as they can keep up with the two levels of life (one life being in the game and the second in real life). However, I do think that if you are a gamer or keep up with gaming culture you will especially like this. There are a ton of Easter eggs and nods to gamer culture.

They also have a lot of non gamer references and cameos as well. They hide a lot of things from you and smack you with these surprises close to the end of the movie. I really had a lot of fun with a few of the joke cameos and references. You have to watch the credits to see just who cameoed in this movie because if you don't listen or look fast enough you just might miss it. It just goes to show how much of a passion project this was to have so many people involved in this movie.

Overall, I really had a good time watching this movie. I think I would watch this movie again because I think I missed out on a lot of the fun references. There's so many that it might be worth it for me to watch it again. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It is definitely worth watching in the movie because it has a lot of fun action sequences and it's nice to have a crowd reaction to these sequences. This is definitely a movie I will be recommending.
