My Review of "Freaky"

This movie sort of reminds me of a remake of the 2002 movie "The Hot Chick"

Freaky is a horror movie that came out in 2020. It's got a very silly and fun premise that lead me to think this was a remake of the 2002 movie "The Hot Chick". Even though it's technically a horror movie I found that there were probably more laughs. Fortunately these moments of comedy are meant to be in there and not because the movie is taking itself too seriously.

The movie starts off with our main protagonist Millie. She's a beautiful high school teenager but her family has suffered a traumatic loss recently. Ever since her father had passed away it seems that Millie has taken on the role of consoling her grieving mother. In doing so, she puts her own life in the backseat. She's missing out on major teenager events in her life but the only people noticing this is her friends and her sister.

Meanwhile there's there seems to be some sort of psychotic serial killer on the loose nicknamed the Butcher. He's a huge man that is killing citizens of the little town indiscriminately. In one of his killing sprees he's lured to a mystical dagger and decides to take it to kill his next victim.

Unfortunately for Millie, her mother had forgotten to pick her up after school. The Butcher so happened to be in the neighborhood and we have Millie running for her life. After a little hide and seek the Butcher finally catches up to Millie and stabs her with the mystical dagger. Millie's sister fortunately comes in the nick of time to save her from the Butcher.

Through a some mystical powers of the mystical dagger, Millie and the Butcher's minds swap to each other's bodies overnight. The killer is now in Millie's body and Milly in the Butcher's body. Soon we find out that this change will be permanent unless they get the dagger and stab one another again within 24 hours. Sounds simple but the butcher loves the anonymity of Millie's body.

From there on the movie really starts up and you see all the crazy hijinks that Millie (in the Butcher's body) goes through in order to get the mystical dagger and stab her former body. It is very predictable but there's a lot of fun to be had with this movie.

It's the sweet simplicity of this movie that makes it so entertaining. Everyone is kind of one dimensional in this movie. With such simple characters it's pretty easy to decipher who is a good guy that we should be rooting for and who are the characters we should be going against. The movie is definitely targeting an adolescent audience and it shows.

I found that there were so many similarities between this movie and the 2002 movie The Hot Chick. The only main differences was that the body that was switched was a murderer and not a common thief. Much of the same story elements remained the same with the exception for a few modern touches. So this movie felt very familiar to me but that movie came out in 2002. There's a whole new generation of adolescent audience that would not have been alive at that time. They'll probably be able to watch and enjoy this movie.

Overall, I thought this was a fun and whimsical movie that young adults will enjoy. It's a movie that came out at a time when we were starved for entertainment. Unfortunately I think it'll be lost in the shuffle after 2020. It's by no means a horrible movie but it's not a movie that will blow your mind either. I will have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It is enjoyable enough to tell others to watch but I wouldn't say go out of your way to watch it.
