My Review of "Extraction 2"

I didn't expect this movie to be this good.

Extraction 2 is a Netflix exclusive action title that came out in 2023. It's a sequel to the surprising first Extraction movie that I was surprisingly liked. Usually Netflix exclusive movies aren't that good but they've really stepped up their game lately. This movie is another example of the fact that their quality has increased.

The movie starts off right after the events of the first movie. Many of us thought that this movie would be impossible since the main character, Tyler, had died. This movie brings him back from the brink of death. You'll have to leave your hat of rationality out the door to fully enjoy this movie. There are a lot of things where you have to have a stretch of the imagination to understand. It is a crazy action movie after all.

Tyler is brought back to life and they give him an option to live his days in retirement in seclusion. He's given a cabin with enough money and supplies to live out the rest of his life. Of course as a crazy mercenary it's just not in him to remain in retirement.

A mission comes along that he feels very invested in. He can't turn it down. The job basically deals with a family with a very absurd situation. The patriarch of this family has been imprisoned but he's got massive power so he has his entire immediate family locked in there with him. He basically controls things from inside his prison walls. Unfortunately he's also quite abusive to his wife and it's not the best of environments for his kids.

Tyler's mission is to bust this dysfunctional family out of this heavily guarded prison so that they can get away from this crazed crime lord. Easier said than done because the action sequences that they have to complete this mission are insane.

There are a few long one takes that will have you mesmerized at the creativity they used to add to the action sequences. Each of the sequences get more and more insane in this movie. The weapons and explosions get bigger and bigger as the movie continues. If you're into crazy action movies look no further because this one has you covered.

I like the fact that they don't ignore the characters in this movie as well. Each of them have a relatively understandable motivation. It was nice to be able to know where they're coming from and I didn't really have any crazy doubts of their motivations. Everything seemed to click and I liked that.

Each of the actors does a good job in bringing their characters to life as well. Though most of the characters are mostly one dimensional, this is kind of to be expected with a mindless action movie. It was nice that they did put a little care into the characters and story to this one.

I felt like this movie used all of the elements that they did with the first movie and brought everything up another level. Usually this is what they do with movie sequels but they had the right amount of elevation that it didn't feel too absurd or total change in genre.

You kind of don't really have to watch the first movie to understand this one but it is better if you had seen that one first. It gives you a little context into Tyler's character. They don't really reference anything from the first movie except for the fact that he should have died in the first movie.

Overall, I had a great time with this movie. A better time than I thought I would. Usually sequels don't do well especially with action movies. This is the odd exception and on Netflix at that! I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. I know it's the same score as I gave it's predecessor but this is just a notch above that movie.
