My Review of "Extraction"
A wild action movie that I didn't expect to like as much as I did.
Extraction trailers started popping up and I wasn't impressed. It came out at the right time though. Everyone's probably seen every movie out there and we're all starved to see something new. So I thought, why not? I might as well check it out.
This movie is set somewhere in India. There are apparently huge drug lords living there but then again there's drug lords all around the world. In this case, this story is about the rivalry between two drug lords. As one of the big kingpins is in prison, he's asked his trusted friend Saju to protect his son Ovi.
Unfortunately for Saju, Ovi doesn't like to be confined to his regular routine and goes out to some party with his friend. Ovi and his friend are confronted by some officers who turned out to be working for a rival drug kingpin. They kill Ovi's friend right in front of him and then kidnap him.
Now Saju has to find a way to get Ovi back from the kingpin. They don't have the money to do it but he hatches a plan to use an elite mercenary to do the dirty work and then take Ovi from the mercenary so they don't have to pay the full amount.
That elite mercenary turns out to be a guy named Tyler. He's a mercenary with a heart of gold but with a trouble past. I know that sounds like the most cliche description you've ever heard. It really is but hey we're looking for an action movie what do you expect?
Tyler has problems with the killing of kids because of the death of is own son. His wife has passed away so he doesn't really have much going on for himself anymore. A guy with nothing to lose is a very dangerous man. At least that's what we're supposed to think.
The story isn't anything crazy to write about. I'm sure you've heard this scenario or at least something similar to this a million times. That's not what makes this movie special.
What makes this movie special is actually the action scenes. The action is so visceral and brutal that I was even stunned at some of the scenes. It's not like some sort of gore fest of blood spilling everywhere or heads being decapitating every five minutes. I would say it's similar to what you would expect from a John Wick movie.
I think the beauty about the fight scenes is that they seem to be using such practical and efficient movements that it seems realistic. Although it is all choreographed and unrealistic that people would be able to take so much of a beat down, it still felt so real. If there's any reason for you to watch this movie it should definitely be the action scenes.
Not that the story and the actors aren't good. Everything done in a nice way but they all pale in comparison to the action sequences. Even the chase scenes have an element that will make your blood pump just a little bit harder than you would expect.
There an abundant amount of action sequences as well. They have a few storytelling sprinkled throughout the movie but I would say that they're just there so that you can rest and calm down before the roller coaster starts to speed up again.
Overall, I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. The action sequences will get you wincing while trying to see everything that is happening on the screen. It was a nice surprise in a time when we're not getting many new titles coming our way. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It's enjoyable to recommend but I wouldn't say that this is a classic of any sort.
