My Review of "Earthquake: Legendary"

A highly politicized stand-up that will alienate some but will be hilarious to the rest.

Earthquake: Legendary is Earthquake's first Netflix stand-up special. It seems to be a new stand-up series that highlight stand-up comedians that need more light. I have to admit, I've only heard of Earthquake before but never really heard his sets. This is a shame because he's been around for a long time so there's lots to catch up on.

The set starts off with his introduction. He's a stand-up comedian from Washington DC. In this special he has come back home to where it started and gives insight into the world he now lives in. Right away he addresses the elephant in the room, vaccinations. I'm sure COVID will be a target of jokes for the next decade because of how monumental this disease has been for the world.

Earthquake talks about getting vaccinated. Unfortunately for him there is a stigma in the black community with taking the vaccine. He addresses this stigma in strides. Instead of vilifying the negative stigma he analyses it. He talks about the inconsistency of popular black opinions in his community and family. It's an eye opening revelation that we are all not very consistent with our opinions of things. We're all hypocritical in a lot of the popular opinions that we have.

These jokes fly a mile a minute and had me in hysterics. You don't have to be black to understand the stereotypes he's addressing. Many that love Dave Chappelle will fall right at home with Earthquake's set. It feels very familiar and with the same sort of point of view.

The delivery of the jokes is far from the same though. I found that there's a bit of Bernie Mac in the delivery and tempo of Earthquake's set. He uses some rhymes and repetition to get his point around. There are even catch phrases thrown in there. I for one loved Bernie Mac's stand-up so it was nice to see that the style hasn't died out.

Earthquake also gets into a lot of controversial topics. I know that his opinions of these matters will turn off certain people but there are a lot of others that will have fun with these jokes. It's very obvious that with the division of opinions in America these jokes too will be divided.

Of these topics, the biggest ones he talks about are child rearing and Trump supporters. He speaks his truth and I understand it is a comedy special. I think if you can shut off your opinion and see this special as a comedy special you'll still be able to laugh at these jokes.

One of the biggest laughs from the set is a set that he does about his personal experience at the doctors office. I won't give away too much but it can be quite explicit. He's able to give us a detailed play by play with so many jokes to follow up these plays. Each of these jokes gets has crowd laughing louder and louder.

This venue of the place he's doing the show is such a great environment for the show. The acoustics of the place really give a great vibe to the show. I felt like everyone was getting in on it.

Overall, I really liked this special. In fact, it was so good that I'm probably going to be checking out his other sets. If that's the purpose of the show they did a fine job making me a quick fan of Earthquake's. Not everyone is going to like this special but if you vibe with Dave Chappelle and Bernie Mac's comedy then you feel right at home with this one. That's why I have to give this comedy special a 9 out of 10. Too bad it's only a half hour show, now I'm hungry for more!
