My Review of "The Batman (2022)"

A superhero movie turned into a film noir crime drama. Not everyone is going to get into it.

The Batman (2022) is a very different type of superhero movie. Gone are the big bombastic super powers. Instead we have a human trying to grapple into his own consciousness to understand why he's doing what he does. We're on the ride during his journey.

Fortunately I also got to see this film in Screen X. This is a new method of drawing people closer into the atmosphere of the action. The movie theater uses the three walls in front of you to cover your peripheral vision. This way you get more immersed into the action. This movie doesn't utilize this feature for the full runtime of the movie. Instead they chose specific action sequences to highlight this feature.

The movie starts off during Halloween. A group of kids with their faces painted are eyeing their next victim while Batman is narrating the situation of Gotham city. This city is rifled with crime that include physical violence. We see the bat signal in the sky and it signifies that Batman is needed. Before he's able to heed his call he makes easy work of these punk kids.

We've now established the dark and gritty atmosphere of the movie. This movie is quite stylized and very moody. Right off the "bat" you can tell that they're going for a film noire feel to the movie. It lends itself well because the movie is about a mysterious villain terrorizing Gotham. He's murdering police officers and organized criminals alike in the name of justice.

The media has a field day with it because this mysterious villain seems to be cleaning up the streets of dirty cops and organized crime. He's exposing the secret lies that haven't been revealed by the media. It's quite interesting that they often use the word "vengeance" repeatedly throughout the movie to make a point. It will later come around to haunt Batman later on in the movie.

This movie is actually more of a crime drama than a superhero movie. They do a good job building intrigue and suspense throughout the show. Each of the actors portray their characters in overtly serious tones. Those that are used to watching Marvel movies will not feel at home with this movie as there are very few jokes made. There are a few funny sequences but I don't know if they were intentionally funny.

When it comes to the action it gets very tense. You'd think you wouldn't be able to catch all the action since all of the scenes are filmed in such dark environments. This film does a good job in using the dark environment to build the mood of the action sequences. Remarkably you can still make out what is happening in these fast paced action sequences. In some ways the Screen X does a remarkable job in helping us feel immersed into car chases and fighting scenes.

I enjoyed the exploration of this movie when they dived into the corrupt world of Gotham. In some ways it feels like a long episode of the Gotham TV show. I wasn't the biggest fan of that show but they did bring out some of the better elements of it.

As a Batman movie it feels more of a comic than your stereotypical Batman movie. The film dives more into how Batman is a detective rather than a video game (how superhero movies are normally made). In video games Batman will beat people up to get to another clue and repeat until he finds the final enemy. There are elements of that in this movie but it feels more like he's discovering more about his past and the underbelly of his city.

That's why a lot of people may not get into this movie. It's an exploration of how Batman is discovering his place in the world and debates whether he's doing the right thing. Most superhero movies know that they're doing the right thing. Things are more clear cut and easy to digest.

Overall, I did like this movie but I wouldn't say I would be able to watch this movie over and over again. Don't get me wrong, this movie is made very well and I enjoyed it for what it was but I'm not certain I would continue to go back. That's why I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10.
