My Review of "Copshop"

I have to admit I didn't think much of this movie going in but I was pleasantly surprised with it in the end.

Copshop is a mysterious movie that was released in 2021. I had seen a few trailers for this movie last year and they didn't show much. It didn't seem like a movie that would appeal to me at all. This is why when I finally got a chance to check it out I was really impressed with what they did.

This movie starts off pretty wild. There's some sort of commotion with a group of people so the police have to intervene. It's a pretty wild situation and our main protagonist Valerie has to fire off her gun to quiet everyone down. Just then she gets sucker punched and goes to the ground. Her partner picks her up and the assailant oddly asks to be incarcerated.

Already you can tell this is going to be a pretty oddball story with weird characters and a huge air of mystery. Shortly after criminal number one goes to jail there's another character that practically mows down some officers on the side of the road with his car. This character gets out of the car seemingly intoxicated. Of course the officers bring him in.

Low and behold we have the two criminals in jail cells right beside each other. The two know each other and obviously hate each other. Fortunately for assailant number one they are in separate cells.

This is pretty much what I knew of this movie from the trailers. Except the trailers didn't mention how they got into jail in the first place. They don't even mention the main protagonist. From the trailers I didn't know so much craziness was going to happen.

This movie had me gripped from start to finish because they did a great job in keeping the suspense up. In every scene there was a sense of something crazy was going to happen. The actors do a great job in heightening the suspense but it's also the camera work and the music. It's pretty much a great all in one package.

Although I mentioned that some crazy that happens in this movie there is still an air of believability throughout the overexaggerated antics of this movie. Sure the police officers probably wouldn't be as naïve as they were in this movie but then again that's why they had this take place in a small town. Each of these ludicrous events reach just at the limit of believability in the bizarreness scale. That's part of the fun.

I also liked that they kept me as the audience guessing. There will be multiple bad guys in this movie and Valerie has to navigate with the limited knowledge of them that she has. As the audience we have to figure out who is the bad guy that we sympathize with the most. This movie will give each character its shine so you can see what their motivations are. I would never want to be in Valerie's shoes because you just don't know who to trust. Everyone in this movie has something you have to second guess them for.

Valerie is also a really badass cop. This is apparent at the beginning of the movie but they just ramp everything up to show how awesome she is. She's the big surprise in this movie because the trailers don't really mention her at all. I really wish they did because I think this movie would have become a lot more popular had everyone known about her.

Overall, I really liked this movie. It was such a huge surprise for me because I didn't really want to watch this movie in the first place. I'm really glad I did because this is a very good movie. That's why I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. You can't judge a book by its cover and this movie is a testament to that phrase.
