My Review of "A Quiet Place"

Here I revisit the original movie. Why did I like this movie so much?

A Quiet Place came out in 2018. It was pretty much a huge surprise as we didn't hear any publicity about this movie when it first came out. It was a small movie that did really well and through word of mouth people started to see how great it really was. I fortunately was one of those that caught the bug.

This movie starts off by setting up the creepy atmosphere of the movie. A family seems to be foraging through a store of some sort to find supplies. There's no sound throughout this first big scene. We see something running really fast in the background but we don't know what it is. We then get introduced to the family. There's a mother, father and three kids.

One of the three kids is really young. He likes to play around and loves this rocket ship in the store. The parents tell him he can't have it because it's too loud. His older sister being a softy gives him the toy anyways but without the batteries.

Of course we know the kid is going to grab the batteries anyways. We soon have one of the most horrifying scenes for the family. As they're walking back to their home the little kid basically turns on this space ship toy. There's a ton of noise from the toy and a creature comes out of nowhere and kills him.

About a year later we see the family all at their home and things have changed. They're a lot more aware of this deadly creature and have set up a system for them to stay alive. I won't go to far from there but this is the premise of the movie. They want to stay alive.

They have some interesting dynamics to the family that keeps this from being a one note horror movie. The sister in the movie is deaf and the father is trying to make a hearing aid that helps her hear. I guess it would help her know when there's noise around.

The brother in the family seems to be an everyday person like you or me. He sees all of the things that are going around in the family and also understands our fear of these creatures.

Then we have the heroic parents in the story. The father is the hunter and gatherer and the mother is no slouch herself. They're both smart people and they just want a safe life for their children. It just so happens that within a year the mother is now pregnant with another child.

This child looks like it's going to come out anytime soon and with creatures that are attracted to sounds we already know this is going to be a difficult delivery.

The amount of edge of your seat thrills is crazy. This movie keeps you on you on the edge because they establish the rules very clearly in this movie. There's no real delineation where we have exceptions. Us as the audience know the rules so we understand why things are scary the way they are. I love that about this movie.

There are a few scenes where I'm scratching my head. Usually we go scratching our head when people just conveniently get out of trouble but this is the opposite. This family is pretty smart and the questionable situations come from moments of questionable bad luck of the family. They did everything right but the movie throws them some monkey wrenches to screw them up. It's a big departure from other movies where people luckily get out of their messes.

Overall, I really loved this movie. Its simplicity part of the beauty of this movie. They don't really do anything really stupid and having these idiosyncrasies with the family was brilliant. It works to help build the story and allows the story to make sense. I have to give this movie an 9 out of 10. I can go back to this movie over and over even though I know the twists throughout the movie.
