NB Reviews: "Minari"
I'm on a quest. A quest to review all 8 of this years nominees for the Academy Award for Best Picture before Oscar night. This, in my opinion, was an exceedingly good batch of nominees. I loved almost all of the films (and I've already reviewed the one I didn't like). So, let's talk about Minari (Dir. by Lee Isaac Chung).
NB NightingalePublished 3 years ago in GeeksRead Between the Script
Unlike this generation of "goldfish" like minds, I enjoy a well-thought out plot, a narrative with a powerful message and a good old-fashion anecdote that an audience can empathize with. A book I've envisioned as a movie is Gloria Naylor's, Linden Hills. It encompasses almost everything I love to read or watch on the big screen. When a wife of the present discovers the diary of another from the past, the woeful accounts of two trophy wives trapped in the same aristocratic society are unveiled. Because of the traditional obscure ideals of a cynical tyrant, he accuses his wife of adultery and makes her a prisoner in their home along with their infant son.

The other day, my 90-year old grandma called me in a panic. We share the same Prime account (which is attached to my credit card), and she accidentally bought a movie forgetting I would be footing the bill. I didn't care about the $3.99, but she was insistent upon sending me four dollars in the mail. Once I successfully dissuaded her, I asked what movie she rented. The answer: The Expendables.

I often find myself endlessly clicking through every imaginable streaming service on my Amazon stick in hopes of finding something amazing to watch, only to come up empty. In the end, I settle for old episodes of Friends, which, by the way, never disappoint.
Dana MaxwellPublished 3 years ago in GeeksLean On Me & The Cosby Show
The Cosby Show I'm old school. Plus, I hardly watch any tv these days; so, the only movies and shows that I have to talk about are from the eighties and the nineties. So, the first program I have to talk about is Lean On Me which was released in 1989 (March 3, 1989) and was a true story about a high school (Eastside High) in a low class community, with dysfunctional kids from unstable, dysfunctional, homes, and teachers who had given into the horrible circumstances of the school. A principal, named Joe Clark, came along and changed all their lives.
Shahidah AhmadPublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe Royal Treatment: 3 Things to See If You Watched The Crown and Wanted a Little More Fun
Let's face it: there are a lot of shows (and movies) that tackle the purported lives of royalty. You have your British royalty spanning the ages (everything from The Tudors to The Windsors) and your French royalty gamut (heard of Reign or Versailles?) yet not much else. With The Crown becoming a gradual hit for Netflix over its past four seasons and the real lives of royalty recently crashing back into the worldwide public conversation, it's hard not to try and figure out why. What is our fascination with royalty? What draws us to these dramatics among princes and princesses, duchesses and dukes, and the ways of courtly life? Is it curiosity or envy? Or are we just keen to see ways in which royals struggle just the same as any other red-blooded human beings? The world may never know.

I've grown to adore the quieter aspects of life. Ordinary moments that we take for granted can often be what ground us when things begin to unravel.

Action movies of this type are an increasingly rare breed; moviegoers looking for gunfire and explosions are most likely to find it in a superhero epic or an existing franchise, such as Mission: Impossible or Fast & Furious. Studios are less likely to take risks on original action movies, but that is exactly what we’re getting here.

Surprisingly, the rest of the school day went by uneventfully. None of Elaine and her crew were in Tawny's third and fourth period classes, so she did her best to fit in with the other students. It certainly helped that Maddie was by her side the rest of the day.
Shamona PretzPublished 3 years ago in GeeksTime is a Funny Thing...
Time is a funny thing, especially when it comes to movies. I can remember watching Top Gun over and over again as a kid and always siding with Tom Cruise’s character. As I’ve gotten older, I started to see things from Val Kilmer’s character’s perspective. I would start to hear myself say, “Iceman is right! Maverick is being totally irresponsible!!!” That’s one reason I’ve been re-watching movies during the pandemic. Speaking of Tom Cruise and time, if you want to see a sci-fi action version of Groundhog Day, check out Edge of Tomorrow also commonly referred to as Live, Die, Repeat for reasons that will become clear when you watch the movie.
