It's bigger.

It's better.

It's a great white shark!

We are fascinated with the things that should terrify us, like massive sharks with way too many teeth. We enjoy the heart pumping adrenaline from watching them on the screen. We indulge in watching the attack, the evisceration. We dream about getting in a shark cage just to get that much closer to these beautiful and magnificent beasts.

The only problem is that Shark Week is, you know, a week. What about the rest of the year?

Shark Movies.

When looking for any shark you want to make sure, obviously, it has a shark (honestly the more the merrier) and preferably a killer sound track (helps hype up the suspense) and don't forget the hot babe (usually a main character or one of the first ones to get eaten...oops).

Here is a list of heart pumping killer shark movies you'll want to sink your teeth into to hold you over until the next shark week.

Jaws (4.5/5)

shark attack scene from Jaws (1975)

So this might feel a little cliché, but you can't knock the classics. As a little beach town that relies heavily on the tourist season, they find themselves haunted by a man-eating shark. Threatening to close the beaches, a group of men set out to find and kill this menace. This movie is filled with nail biting suspense, leaving you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Will they get the shark? Will they make it out alive?

One of the reasons why this movie is so exciting is because you don't see the actual shark until the very end of the movie. Sure you see the fin and the shadowed outline of the body and maybe even some teeth, but there isn't any full on shark action until the climax of the movie. It's that continual unknown that draws you in.

And how can we forget that classic scene where you're waiting for the shark to pop out, because you know something is going to pop out, but instead you get a severed human head! Makes me jump every time, no lie.

If you haven't seen this movie, it's a definite must see if you are a shark lover. And if you've already seen it, it's a good summer movie for a drive-in and always worth the rewatch.

The Shallows (4/5)

Now this movie here, might not seem as exciting with a minimal cast (Blake Lively's screen time is only rival to that of the shark's), but this movie will have you counting the seconds, holding your breath and waiting to see what happens next.

Trying to reconnect with the memories of her dead mother, Nancy (Blake Lively) travels to this remote pristine beach. There are several other surfers there and to her horror, despite her best efforts to warn them of the approaching danger, she watches them get eaten alive by a shark. Stranded in the ocean, the only thing between her and the safety of the beach is a man eating shark.

This movie is a classic Man vs. Nature. Bidding her time on a rock during low tide, she desperately hatches a plan for her escape. Will she be able to make it in time? Can she possibly outswim a shark?

It's unique take on the classic shark movie arc is appealing and fresh. Despite it having a bit of a slow beginning, The Shallows is filled with suspense and pretty gnarly shark attack scenes, and is a must see. I highly recommend adding this to any shark lover's movie rotation.

47 Meters Down (3/5)

As in most shark movies, it involves being trapped somewhere by a shark (or sharks) with minimal or no hope of escape. 47 Meters Down is the epitome of this.

Hot babe box is definitely checked with this one when two sisters Lisa and Kate (played by Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) go on vacation and Kate convinces her sister to try out this shark cage. As perusal for this genre, they go out on a questionable boat and just happen to be in the wrong place at the right time. Enjoying their day and shark watching, the cord on their cage suddenly snaps and they plummet the 47 meters down to the bottom.

Desperate for a rescue as these two begin to run low on oxygen, they must contemplate the impossible decision of staying inside of the cage and hoping a solution comes before they run out of oxygen or brave the shark infested waters as they try to swim slowly enough to the surface to not induce the bends.

47 Meters Down Uncaged (4/5)

Far more terrifying and suspenseful than it's predecessor, 47 Meters Down Uncaged covers all of the boxes you are looking for in a shark movie: hot babes, terrifying sharks, who (if any) will make it out alive?

A group of teens plan on spending some time exploring the underwater caves that one of their dads is currently working in. It's full of ancient carvings and stone structures and a really awesome way to spend some time in the summer. Everything is going great until one of the girls get spooked. She's not entirely sure what she saw, but she knows there was something there. A simple error leaves them trapped inside of an underwater cave collapse and they must find an alternative route out. What they don't know, and very soon will find out, is that these caves a filled with starving and blind cave sharks.

Working together, they must find a way out of the caves before the sharks get a real taste for blood.

The suspense only grows throughout this movie, trapped in a mostly dark surrounding, you're left just as frightened as the girls, wondering when the next shark will appear. Once they finally think they have made it to safety, when running into the dad, they make it to a possible escape, but heightened terror and frustrations have them all on edge in these shark infested waters.

The Meg (4/5)

If you're a huge fan of sci-fi movies like me, you'll want to sink your teeth into The Meg. It has all of the action-packed adrenaline and energy of a good shark movie combined with the epic proportions of a sci-fi movie.

A group of scientists have spent billions of dollars building a research facility and have arrived at the moment they have all been waiting for. Is there something beneath the cloudy bottom of the Mariana Trench? Turns out there is an entire ecosystem we never knew about. It's a huge discovery and accomplishment for the team, but celebration is quickly staunched when the submarine team is attacked by an unknown object.

The unknown object, a megalodon. A prehistoric shark, thought to have been extinct for years is the largest shark known to man stretching up to approximately 18 meters (roughly half the size of a full grown blue whale and compare to the measly 4-5 meters of a Great White!). Unbeknownst to the scientists, one of the megalodons have followed them back to the surface.

Plagued by this creatures destructive path, the team must quickly come up with a solution before it arrives at a popular beach full of people. How will they stop this menace? Can they before it causes irreparable damage? Did only one megalodon make it through?

Exciting and unexpecting, the Meg puts a sci-fi twist on your classic shark movie with a bigger bite.

Now go and get your feet wet! Don't sit in a slump wondering where all the sharks have gone when Shark Week is over. Take a bite out of these thrilling movies that are worth watching again and again.
