'General Hospital' fans are concerned about the fate of Nicholas Bechtel

The storyline might dictate an older and darker Spencer Cassadine

General Hospital viewers have watched Nicholas Bechtel grow from an impetuous seven year old Spencer Cassadine, into a handsome teen, complete with a squeaky changing voice. The current storyline, however, has fans concerned that GH might SORAS the popular character and replace Bechtel. This is all speculation but there is a very good reason. Ava and Nickolas are married and deeply in love and Spencer will have to return home at some point. Those who enjoy the CBS daytime drama are concerned that a darker, more brooding Spencer might be needed and that a new face might be given to this beloved character.

Nicholas Bechtel held his own as a brooding teen Spencer, when his father and stepmom visited him in boarding school. He was pretty convincing as a young man who had been betrayed by his dad. There might be some viewers, however, who will not be able to relate to Spencer if he goes full Cassadine while wearing the face of Bechtel. Fans still remember when the young actor first took on the role as the son of the Cassadine prince. It may be easier for some to embrace a different face when Spencer goes off the rails.

Young Bechtel

There is also the fact that Bechtel always seemed a little young to be in love with Josslyn. If Joss and Cam don't work out or Cameron falls for Trina there will need to be a love interest for the daughter of Carly and Jax. An older version of Spencer might be just the right fit. There is also the rumor that Spencer is the one behind sending Ava the plastic severed hand which caused everyone to think of Ryan Chamberlain who cut off his own limb. Most viewers do not believe Ryan sent the creepy gift and some suggest it might have been Cyrus Renault.

Nicholas Bechtel is a gifted actor and certainly could portray Spencer gone dark. He would roll with the punches and be in full character if given a chance. The issue would be the fan reaction to such an abrupt change. Spencer has been mentioned in recent episodes and summer is coming. It's unrealistic to expect him to remain abroad forever considering he is a young teen. Some General Hospital fans hope Spencer will be a surprise guest at the upcoming dinner party that Ava is hosting because spoilers have said there will be family drama.

It's not known for certain how Spencer feels about his new stepmom because their relationship is pretty complicated. He became irate when Ava allowed Valentin to buy her silence regarding his having shot Nikolas. Now that the Cassadine prince is alive and well and married to Ms. Jerome there is the potential for healing. Everyone knows Valentin did not kill him so perhaps Spencer could find it in his heart to forgive the initial deception. After all, he was plotting with his dad to get Ava to end the marriage but then Nava fell in love for real.

The recent mentions of Spencer are almost assuredly an indication that he will eventually make his way back to Wyndemere and Port Charles. The question that fans have on their minds is whether or not it will be Nicholas Bechtel or a new face. Considering that Bechtel has history on the ABC daytime drama and is a fan favorite perhaps the powers that be will bring him back. There is no doubt that some GH viewers would enjoy seeing the teen take on a meatier role but his fate is not in the hands of the viewers.

Spencer and Ava

Everything depends on the vision the writers have for the character and if Nicholas Bechtel is a good fit for Spencer going forward. There will also have to be considerations based on the young actor's current schedule as he has also been working on other projects. Make sure you are watching out for updates regarding Spencer Cassadine's possible return to Port Charles as well as who will be cast in the role. Best of luck to Nicholas Bechtel wherever his talents take him in future endeavors.
