Five Reasons Why 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures' of Superman Still Has Devoted Fans

In June 1997, the popular ABC show, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, faded off the air, but the fan base has remain strong, devoted, and is growing with new viewers. I've been a fan since the show debuted in 1993, and I am still drawn to the episodes time and again. In a lot of ways, Lois and Clark is timeless, much like the comic book Lois and Clark. Here are five reasons why fans continue to tune in.

1. THE HUMOR

If there was one thing Lois and Clark had going for it, it was humor. The show never took itself too seriously in spite of the perilous situations Metropolis always encountered. Take, for instance, the scene in the pilot when Clark is trying to choose a costume.

2. THE LOVE STORY

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman focused more on the relationship with Lois and Clark than the Man of Steel, and it found a niche with fans who wanted to see the romance. For three seasons, the show played the will they or won't they card until in Episode 3 of Season 4, fans were rewarded with the wedding. It is still a fan favorite episode, and the views for wedding vows number in the tens of thousands on Youtube.

3. THE CHEMISTRY

No one could deny that the two leads, Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain, had major chemistry. They played perfectly off one another and made the viewers believe they really were falling in love. Beyond that, they embraced the characters of Lois Lane and Clark Kent, making them uniquely their own.

Lois Lane remained the strong, determined reporter with a nose for a story, but this Clark Kent wasn't the bumbling nerd from Superman lore. Though Dean Cain's character started out as unsure and a bit awkward, he grew into a confident powerhouse of a reporter that gave Lois Lane a run for her money.

4. PERRY WHITE

In a show that focused on Lois and Clark, Perry White stood out, thanks to the masterful acting of Lane Smith (1936-2005). He made a supporting character a necessary one, and no episode was the same without his Elvis references and dry wit. See for yourself!

5. THE SHENANIGANS

The plots could get a bit wild on this show, and well, unbelievable, but that's what made this show stand out. In spite of the sheer incredulity, fans watched because they had to see how the ridiculousness would be resolved. There were episodes where Lois was cloned and replaced with a frog-eating version of herself, the entire newsroom of the Daily Planet got sprayed with love potion, and The Prankster created a machine that froze everyone in place. But this was a show about a man from another planet who flew, could bend steel, and fry an egg with his eyes. Nothing was too outlandish. And it always made us come back for more.

These are just some of the reasons why the fans remain devoted to this show. Fan fiction is still being written, videos created, and there's even a bulletin board where fans talk about their favorite episode.

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman may have flown off the air almost twenty years ago after four seasons, but it's alive and strong even in 2016.
