Dead by Daylight: Game Review

Whereas many game developers have tried their hardest in the past to bridge the gap between horror movie fiction and online multiplayer, none have done so better than the creators of Dead by Daylight. In a game world where darkness can be an ally or an enemy, the developers of Dead by Daylight allow their players to choose which side of the chessboard they want to play on. As a survivor, you are grouped with three other members who are also seeking refuge and freedom from the darkness and the entity it has taken control of in this shadowy realm.

Those who side with the darkness in Dead by Daylight gain access to a slew of killers with incredible abilities inspired by horror icons such as Freddy Kruger, Leatherface, Michael Myers, and even the Demogorgon. The primary goal for the killers is simple: hunt and capture the four survivors as quickly as possible, while the four survivors hide and collaborate to build enough electric-powered generators to open the exits in each map.

Whether you're a killer or a survivor, you can upgrade and customize your character to your liking. And, while microtransactional purchases can still increase the variety of cosmetics available for your character, none of this changes the fact that the only way to improve your character tree skills is to do the work and manage your blood point currency during your play-through.

Mind you, the overall quality of this immersive and competitive game has fully evolved over the past five years or so since its original release. With that said, I'm confident that the transition experienced by seasoned gamers at the time of the game's release has changed from 2016 to 2021. (at the time of writing this.) In comparison to previous years' surprises and other content installed throughout the four seasons of the year, the planned DLC's have placed the Dead by Daylight franchise in an innovative space to lead the new wave of games that cater to the community and corporate faces in the gaming industry.

Although the extra bells and whistles are nice, some key factors do dull the franchise a little. The truth is that removing the natural ability to communicate with your survivor team on the fly removes the immediate connection between players. Those who play the Dead by Daylight matches, on the other hand, tend to ignore this mental notion and continue onward, winning countless matches without ever needing it.

All I'm saying is that if you're looking for a fun game night with team coordination and consistent communication in the midst of an adrenaline-induced coma of a game match, this may not be the journey for you. There was never a moment of simple leisure knowing an exit could be moments away from freedom to the last survivor nervousness scouting a secret hatch located somewhere on the match that could grant any last standing survivor a chance of instant freedom in my playthroughs in every Dead by Daylight match.

Dead by Daylight is as much a chess match as it is a race against the unstoppable clock of morality. Getting that last kill and escaping by the skin of your teeth is the gift that keeps on giving in Dead by Daylight. Since 2016, screams of terror have echoed through the entity's darkness, and none have lived to tell the tale, because the entity never forgets.

Few games are as addictive as Dead by Daylight when it comes to multiplayer action-survival games. Keep in mind that this game was not designed for the faint of heart; however, those interested in diving into a game universe based on the horror genre will always find refuge in the growing community of a home that the Dead by Daylight has built to this day.
