Beyond Salem creates Daytime Emmy controversy

The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations were recently announced and both NBC'S Days of our Lives and its spinoff on Peacock Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem received nods. Shortly after the nominees became public knowledge the Soap Opera Network, made an inquiry to the National Academy of Television Arts & Science.

An issue was revealed and NATAS will now be changing the nomination totals for both series. Initially, the organization announced that DOOL had received 11 nods and the spinoff series had three. The new totals will reveal that “DAYS” now has 12 nominations and “Beyond Salem” has four. There had been confusion related to the combined totals for the two shows in the Outstanding Casting category which had Beyond Salem and DOOL listed as a single nominee.

In the literature, the series were listed as "Days of our Lives / Beyond Salem NBC | Peacock". Each show is listed separately in three additional categories where they are competing against each other. These are Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, Writing Team, and Directing Team. In some categories like Series, Writing, and Directing where Daytime Emmy entrants were allowed to submit a full episode, “Beyond Salem” was allowed to enter separately.

Necessary changes have been made

To add to the confusion, in categories where entrants were to submit highlighted scenes from the year, “DOOL had the option to include material from “Beyond Salem” on the same reel as footage DAYS. This is because the same production team was used for both series. This option was extended to other craft categories but Casting was the only one where a nomination was received in this format.

To simplify the issue, the only thing that has changed is that each show now has one more nomination than on the day they were first announced If the spin-off series wins in the category the statue will be engraved as follows: “Days of our Lives / Beyond Salem NBC | Peacock.” .The fact that Beyond Salem is being included in any category is surprising to many fans because they did not know that the 5 series episodes would qualify with soaps that have been on the air for decades.

This will be the first time since 2014 that more than 4 Daytime soaps are competing and the first time ever, that a television series will compete against its own spinoff in the same category. Following are the nominees and categories for Days of Our Lives and Beyond Salem for the 2022 Daytime Emmys. Congratulations and best of luck to one and all.
