Could The Eternals Defeat Thanos if they were Allowed to Interfere? (MCU)

Spoilers for The Eternals

As we've learned from the film, The Eternals did not intervene in the fight against Thanos because they were instructed by Arishem not to interfere with conflicts unrelated to deviants. But what if they were able to interfere?

Disclaimer: All of the following is based on MCU film events, facts, and knowledge and not comic book knowledge.

First, we have to run through two questions that are ultimately unanswerable due to a lack of information.

Could Sersi change the infinity stones into marble, water, or other substance? Or could Sersi turn any ordinary rock into new infinity stones?

Sersi's main ability that makes her unique from her peers is that she can manipulate energy and transform objects into something else. This is seen when she turns a bus into rose petals, a deviant into a tree, a knife into water, and ultimately Tiamut into marble (with the Unimind).

The infinity stones, however, may be a little harder for Sersi to transform. Because both Sersi's powers and the infinity stones are made up of similar cosmic energy, it may be extremely difficult for her to transform the infinity stones into normal rocks or vice versa.

Maybe with the Unimind she could do this. For the sake of the article, let's say that she is unable to manipulate infinity stones in this way.

Could Druig mind control Thanos?

Druig's main ability is mind control. He does this pretty seamlessly and uses this ability to run a village for generations. To be honest, Druig could probably mind control Thanos. As seen in Avengers: Infinity War, Mantis is able to manipulate Thanos' mind with difficulty. As we've seen in Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, Mantis is able to put Ego, an actual celestial, to sleep. Although most of the time Ego is asking for it, she does this against his will during the final battle. She seems to do it easier than she does with Thanos. Putting aside the implication here that Thanos is stronger than Ego (to which he probably isn't), this means that Druig may also have a little trouble controlling Thanos, considering he needed the Unimind to attempt controlling Tiamut and Mantis did not.

So, for the sake of the piece, Druig's mind-controlling strength against Thanos is similar to Mantis.

The Battle

Now that we've gotten those two inconsistencies out of the way, it is time to discuss their fight strategy.

**For the sake of the MCU timeline, this non-canon battle takes place during the time of Avengers: Infinity War after Thanos retrieves all of the stones. I envision him in Wakanda after knocking out Wanda, but before Thor's arrival. In this version, The Eternals beat Thor to the scene and Thor doesn't arrive until The Eternals are done. This way, it makes sense for The Eternals because they are stuck on Earth, they're all alive, and it is when Thanos is at his most powerful.**

Throughout the battles in the film, it is evident that all of The Eternals are good at combat. However, based on their abilities, they will have different roles during battle. Their fight strategy would be very similar to the one in Avengers: Infinity War on Titan, where they had the masters of combat beat Thanos down so they could disable him in order to get Mantis able to use her ability.

They would first bring out the members who have their biggest strengths on the battlefield. The best options for this would be Ikarus, Gilgamesh, Makkari, Thena, and Kingo, as these are the members with abilities best for combat. These members of the Eternals would most likely fight and work together like Iron Man, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Drax, and Spider-Man did in Avengers: Infinity War. Sprite may also join in the fight at a later time, and use her illusions to distract Thanos in a similar way to Doctor Strange after some of her peers go down. Honestly, and this may be the bias talking, they could probably do this without Sprite.

With them on the battlefield, Ajak would stay on the sidelines in order to heal anyone who needs it. Ajak, Phastos, Sersi, and Druig would stay on the sidelines. Once Thanos is vulnerable, Phastos, with his tech creation ability, would use a similar contraption to the one he used against Ikarus in their final battle.

Obviously, this contraption was made post-Thanos, but again Phastos would create it for the sake of this battle.

Once Thanos is contained, Ajak would heal all of the members who are injured. Druig would mind control Thanos to the best of his ability so he doesn't resist the contraption too much. Other Eternals would also hold Thanos down just to ensure his inability to escape. Sersi would go up to the gauntlet and change the metal of the gauntlet into water. This way, the stones fall to the ground. She also turns the ground around the stones into more water in order to create a little river where the stones float over to Phastos. Phastos has a contraption ready to contain the Infinity Stones, he uses it to collect them, and takes them away.

Then, just for my enjoyment, Thena uses a sword to cut off Thanos' head. She's the type who would go for the head.

So yes, I think with the right strategy, The Eternals could've defeated Thanos even with the power of the infinity stones.
