The Bill Comes Due.

The Infinity War saga captivated Marvel fans with its heart, action and unforgettable moments, culminating in a huge crossover event featuring our heroes uniting to defeat a time-travelling Thanos. With plans for Marvel projects stretching two years into the future, the time is now to begin gearing up for the next Thanos-level threat. With the shattering of the Sacred Timeline in Loki, the revelation of Wanda as a Nexus being, and the reappearance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, the fabric of space-time itself is at stake. Who better to defend time as we know it than the Guardian of the Time Stone? Especially in this early stage of the next phase of Marvel movies, as new heroes such as the Eternals and Shang-Chi are introduced, Dr. Strange will take on a pivotal role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Part of Strange's pivotal role in the MCU seems to be his part in helping create the multiverse. As we see in the most recent Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, Dr. Strange casts a spell hoping to help Peter Parker return to the normal life of a high school student after Mysterio revealed Parker's secret identity to the world. Whether through the power of the spell alone or, more likely, compounded with the events of WandaVision, Loki, and What If...? the reality of the MCU begins to crumble with scenes showing an Inception-like inversion of New York city, the basement of the Sanctum Sanctorum torn apart by Strange's spell, and the arrival of villains from older Spider-Man projects. Strange has a history of causing problems with his arrogance and his obsession with fixing the problems of others. This tendency served him well as a surgeon and as the Sorcerer Supreme, as seen with his actions in Dr. Strange. His greeting of "Dormammu, I've come to bargain" has become iconic in the MCU and was effective in forestalling the rise of the Dark Dimension. However, to defeat the Dread One, Strange is forced to meddle with the Natural Law, an event that is becoming more and more common in recent entries in the MCU. In addition to trapping Dormammu in a time loop, the use of the Time Stone also causes a rift between Strange and his former friend, Karl Mordo.

Mordo was the first Master of the Mystic Arts to reach out to Stephen Strange and bring him into the fold of magic-wielders. Serving as the Ancient One’s right-hand-man, Mordo was closely involved with all the sorcerers, training them and helping defend the Sanctums against Kaecilius and his Zealots. When it was revealed that the Ancient One drew power from the Dark Dimension, a practice strictly outlawed among the other Masters, Mordo felt the betrayal the most. The Ancient One's deception in the quest for power and Dr. Strange's actions against Dormmamu caused Mordo to become disillusioned with the Masters of the Mystic Arts. As he left the Order, he warned Strange about the dangers of tampering with the Natural Law in things like time and space, saying "The bill comes due. Always." With the direction the MCU is taking, this seems to be exactly what Mordo was warning about. Intense consequences and fallout from Strange meddling in things he should not coinciding with the creation of the multiverse. With very little provocation or convincing on the part of Peter Parker, the Sorcerer Supreme casts a spell to rewrite the fabric of reality. This could make Strange a target for the disillusioned Mordo, who set off to return balance to the world by robbing sorcerers of their power.

In comics and other epic stories, the heroes are often the engineers of their own adversaries. Given Mordo's warning and his shared history with Dr. Strange there is surely a showdown coming between the two of the them in Multiverse of Madness. Depending on the suffering and casualties that Strange's wayward spell causes, Mordo could have plenty of emotional ammunition to throw in the good doctor's face. While Mordo will not be the big bad of the MCU's next phase, with the One Who Remains lurking in the shadows of the shattered Sacred Timeline, the doctor's former ally will undoubtedly respond to the continued violation of the Natural Law.
