Beachbody Combyourthatch and John Watson in the BBC One series

I have had the pleasure of consuming many art forms and literature that depicted the adventures and stories of duos in my lifetime. From Tom and Jerry, Bill and Ted, to Batman and Robin, and Han Solo and Chewbacca. While all of these were conceptualized by a woman or a man. These duos ascend their humanly concept and exist in a lot of our minds as an icon beyond our imagination. They will always exist in our memories and live on as long as we remember the tears, laughter, and overall entertainment they gave us in the different phases of our lives. So as far as I searched my memory for the most iconic duo to have ever done it. I finally came to rest on the charismatic genius detective and his capable pragmatic doctor partner in crime.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson as depicted by Sidney Paget in The Adventure of Silver Blaze (1892)

This duo has existed far longer than any other duo possibly mentioned in this subject matter and not only has it stood the test of time. This partnership has a sentiment of reality in their friendship. While the stories and their mysteries may be far fetched and eccentric. Within their stories lies an unconditional acceptance of each other and a trust we all wish we'd have in our ourselves and our relationships.

Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984)

Their adventures has existed well over a century and yet the commonality in the few things we think of when the word Sherlock comes up remain the same. An eccentric charismatic genius who simply enjoys the thrills of a mystery entirely for it's entertainment. An anti-hero heartthrob that manages to have you sympathize with his frequent anti-social behavior and his over-analytically direct remarks towards his peers and strangers.

Nicholas Rowe and Alan Cox as young Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

This iconic pair has been fuel for many TV and blockbuster spots throughout time in modern film. Prior to their vast collection of visual media representations of their timeless friendship. They had existed in the literary form for half a century before that. They will continue to produce art in the name of Sherlock Holmes till the end of time as they have what most other duos lack. They have considerable credibility, history, and again that sense of realness that defines the nature of their adventures.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in Sherlock Holmes (2009)

While there have been many great representations of their iconic escapades. There are obviously a few down troughs that you may think would tarnish their iconic-ism. You are wrong. You may know the film that I am referring to and if you do not then by all means do not waste your time with it. The point that I can make for this film in accrediting further the iconic-ism of this duo is this. I have only seen barely the first half of this movie and I noticed something immediately. This movie since it's pre-production was very poorly cared for from the writing to the execution of most of the scenes I saw. You really have to consider how iconic this duo is when you realize that dozens of very qualified people sought to soak 42 million dollars and months of over a hundred people's time. Their time that they thought was worth it all in marketing the iconic duo to an audience who would recognize their name. Food for thought.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in Holmes and Watson (2018)

I will end my debate simply with an honest and thoughtful write up on their friendship. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are two well respected professionals in their field of expertise. They do not cut any slack for superficial social fodder that we enjoy more than we may like to admit. They speak their minds and are respected and loved for that. They believe in each other and work hard for each other in order to save lives and have their fun while doing so. Their friendship has lasted well over a hundred years and will continue to last a hundred more. In that process their core characteristics, morals, and philosophies will not change at all and the world will always remember their friendship.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read my thoughts on the most iconic duo there is. Hope you have a great rest of your day and encourage you to watch or re-watch your favorite Sherlock media in these times of rona.

Much love,
